That is the appeal. It looks simple and kickass, not like an over-designed plastic toy.
The color scheme is also significantly less eye-cancer inducing in comparison with the classical bright blue one.

I don't really like the funnels. but I like the more angular design, over the original blocky, plus it has a normal backback over the Zeta's stupid thing. The double v-fin is nice, too. Ikinda think of the Nu as the UC lead Gundam, like the others are bland concept are, but this finalized the design

I suppose it's possible that the taped segments weren't fully secured and they were taped to denote that, but even then it's a bit iffy because of the placement of all the tape. Probably just some animator going a bit ham on trying to make the scene look realistic.

it's at the joining of armor plates and later we see it semi-assembled in the hangar. I think the armor was being test fitted before it was moved; the tape is there to secure it before it is welded in place

Don't know why you're so hostile but it looks nothing like an Eva outside the long chin.
The overall silhouette is different, the armor is segmented in a completely different way, and the frame isn't as organic as an Eva.
Besides, it's common for mechanical designers to have an aesthetic that is easily recognizable, it's the reason why you can tell and Okawara design from a Nagano one.

I think the coolness in the Nu Gundam is largely how it's used in action. The funnels, combined with its other armaments, make for really dynamic combat. It also has one of the coolest moments in all of Gundam associated with it. It's particular V-fin also resembles a crown. I see it more as simple than "bland." I do think the Hi-Nu and HWS Equipment make it infinitely cooler, however.
