Yes, ZZ is a direct sequel, like the very next day. As others will no doubt mention, ZZ starts out very lighthearted and silly, so it's a bit of a shock coming right out of Zeta. It gets back to seriousness about halfway through.

It is a direct sequel, and the first 2 episodes make that clearer than crystal. The characters change though, Kamille and Fa while present in the first couple of episodes are irrelevant when the new cast takes over.
Don't expect the same tone of Zeta. You ain't gonna get it, ZZ tone's is much similar to that of the original Gundam. So viewer beware.
