Cranial units refers to the span from the top of the skull to the base of the nose. Unlike measuring by heads, cranial units don't change dimensions depending on the angle, it's always an even square/sphere. Because of this, it's also useful in proportioning for poses.

The average male figure is 12 cranial units tall, with half of that going to the legs. From the top of the head to the base of the clavicle is 2 heads. the torso is 4.

Giant robots perform something of an optical illusion, they are only 11 CUs tall, with only 1 cranial unit for the head and neck to share, this makes the body look much larger but still retaining a semblance of proportion. the knees also tend to be higher on the figure, resting in the center of the 3rd leg CU instead of between the 3rd and 4th CU like on a normal figure.

I had known of using heads for measurement, but not this technique.

I usually try to avoid measuring for proportions when drawing robots, but I may employ it for other subjects.

On a side note, would anyone mind if I dumped some references? I own a set of J-Decker animator refs that I posted a while back, but some people may have missed 'em.

That looks super nice, a lot like Ron Cobb's (Alien, Aliens, The Abyss) artwork. That kind of detailing and panellization/surface texture is one of things I love most about mechanical design but most difficult to do. I can conjure it up in my imagination but never hold it long enough to get down on paper (as rough as my shit-tier drawing skills will allow).

Ideally, I should make a low-poly model first to get my desired silhouette and proportions. But I'm an impatient person who wants immediate self gratification. So when I make a component, say the arms, I build it all the way to the small details and move on to the next component. Of course my method back-fires as I need to revisit the finished parts when there's some design elements from one component that conflicts the others. In the case of this combiner, it happens most of the time because of the higher amount of moving parts.

Not drawing atm, but I'd recommend you take a look at the Armored Core V and Veridict Day artbooks. The weapon designs are mostly realistic looking and down-to-earth (the main exception being Overed Weapons but those are just retarded). They can be easily adapted to any mecha design style by changing details.

Wew lad those are some nice designs, I think I'll use the top rifle since it reminds me of a VSS rifle and its nice and compact. But I wanted this suit to have two designated weapons.

Some chicken legged boys I've been working on for a group project. Still iterating on them. I honestly prefer anime style shit but it's been a good creative challenge doing stuff like this.

Thanks anon, genuinely appreciate it. And alas no, but it's what I'm working on in the hopes of getting paid to do this shit soon. Art as a professional field is retarded competitive so my work is maybe mobile game or B-tier indie studio level at best.

i just draw freehand but if i want it to look cleaner like haro gundam i draw a quick figure for the pose then draw the mecha over it.
in a new layer i draw over it in cleaner lines and work out any perspective issues plus add details.

Does anyone have any high quality Quo Vadis 2 Mecha images? The only ones I can get aren't that HQ and are from Gearsonline.net the designs I want to see in HQ don't really have any that I can find but I remember some was posted about a month or more ago.
