I think it's hard to update the original Mazinger Z without actually doing a different design for it.

For example, Shin Mazinger used Ken Ishikawa's Mazinger Z version with the bulky black limbs, which is why I think it looked great.

To be fair I doubt a movie would look anywhere as bad as the average crappy TV anime episode if they had gone with 2D.

But the 3D looks good and integrates with the 2D pretty well so they're just complaining because CG is a trigger for anime fans to complain about. Due to some bad examples they're unwilling to accept that there are any good examples because "CG is bad" is sure to get you easy validation.

They're too stupid to see what Toei is doing here though. If the movie is a success they've got the 3D assets ready to go for sequels or maybe even a TV show that will reduce their costs and production time. It doesn't take a genius to see that they're looking towards the future.
