Gundam X's director is the smartest one of all of them.
>>
>>15615084
And he has apparently failed Vader for the last time.
>>
> "Expecting to make that up through disc sales alone is a hopeless business model, but that's how almost all late night anime are." Continuing in his recent response to the NHK program, Takamatsu remarked that there are now relatively few profitable anime.

>Takamatsu said that no matter how many discs and anime sells, directors will not receive even one yen of that money.

>Takamatsu ended his series of tweets by saying he believes that the limits of the current way of making anime are approaching. He thinks bankruptcy will lead to changes in the way anime is produced. He said he thinks that could happen in five or ten years. Takamatsu then said, "No, maybe [studios] don't even have ten years lol."

>20-year veteran anime technical director Taiki Nishimura reported in May that his monthly income is 100,000 yen (about US$900) for each anime that he works on. He said that he wants to concentrate on one anime at a time, but he has to work on two television anime to have enough income. JAniCA reported in 2015 that 759 animators it surveyed earned an average of 3.3283 million yen (about US$27,689) per year in Japan in 2013.
Looks like anime genuinely will die soon

In before /a/ comes along with their 'everything is fine, the anime industry has never been better. Now bring on the next trashy LN/Harem/Isekai adaptation!' spiel.

what makes mecha different from those genres?
>>
>>15615868
why wont they just make japanese netflix and charge per view?

He directed lots of other mecha stuff
>>
>>15615898
That would require voluntary change and the Japanese hate change unless they're forced to.
Like Takamatsu said, it'll only change when more studios start getting bankrupt. We already had manglobe recently, and it's more than likely others will start falling like dominoes.
Personally think Gonzo will be one of the next to go.
>>
>>15615898
because horriblesubs exist.

what they need is product placement.
their business associates are not doing their job.
>>
>>15615923
That's cheating, everyone knows Gonzo can't stay afloat for extended periods of time.
>>
>>15615887
Mecha makes a profit based 99% on toy sales, not on selling DVDs/BDs
>>
>>15615928
>because horriblesubs exist.
They just exist because it's easy to rip the files from Crunchyroll, Daisuki and other western licensing sites. I think it's harder for them to rip from Netflix, which is why Netflix exclusive shows sometimes only get fansubbed if no one rips them, like LWA , or with mecha recently, Kuromukuro.

>>15615945
And if it's not a Gundam or Macross, most mecha shows don't get toys. Remember all those Regalia toys? Or all those Argevollen toys? Aldnoah Zero toys? Kuromukuro toys? Active Raid toys? Concrete Revolutio toys?

They've moved to selling LNs and manga instead of toys for shows that aren't super popular, which barely any mecha is these days, and proven to sell tons of toys.
>>
>>15615963
>Aldnoah Zero toys?
http://myfigurecollection.net/search.php?overall=Aldnoah+Zero&goto=0

Every show you listed bombed hard hence why no merch was made for them
>>
Here's your choices
>Be a toy commercial
Gundam, etc
>Be a otaku merchandise commercial
Things that people by Keychain statues and things like that
>be a commercial to push source material
LN adaptations

The fact of the matter is you have to sell something in this day and age. Studio originals are getting more and more rare.

Figuarts and model kits for Strike Interceptor and Elf Sigma.
>>
>>15616011
that failure deserves to get slammed harder
>>
>>15616029
You can continue to bitch and whine with autistic fury about it every time it's mentioned, it's not going to stop being a good show.
>>
>>15615992
Those are character figures, not actual toys of the mecha. Every popular show gets those, so the point of "mecha makes a profit based 99% of toy sales" doesn't apply.

>Every show you listed bombed hard
Exactly.
So do mecha shows only get toys if they don't bomb? So how do shows make a profit from toys if they only get toys after they've made a profit/not-bombed?

Besides, shows bombing is the norm now
>Takamatsu remarked that there are now relatively few profitable anime.

Look at sales from 2016 - not even 10 shows last year sold more than 10,000 average BD/DVD copies despite the fact that BD/DVD sales is what Takamatsu says most late-night anime aim for. I don't recall exactly how much a show would need to sell on average, but a vast majority of shows made a year sell less than 4,000 copies.

I'm not saying this is what you think, but I don't think enough people realise just how doomed the anime industry is. Where's the future for an industry where, out of hundreds of shows being made each year, only a handful are actually profitable - and even then most of the profit from those don't actually go the people making it.
>>
>>15616003
That's how it was to begin with in anime as well. We eventually saw a golden age due to a strong Japanese economy with studios who had the money to experiment but as long as their economy stagnates we can't expect much in the way of originality anymore.
>>
>>15616044
>not actual toys of the mecha

They were literally on the page linked to you. Also character figures has been a thing for mecha anime for years, there's no distinction between the two because they come from the same franchise from the same genre
>>
>>15616044

> even then most of the profit from those don't actually go the people making it.

Not that I don't agree that anime is dying, but I wouldn't be using this as evidence as it or an indictment of the industry given that that's normal across the board. Involved industries of any kind paying even a fair percentage to the people making the goods is basically unheard of, not just anime.
>>
>>15615907
now why would you go and expose yourself for having shit taste anon?
>>
>>15615084
Good, modern anime is terrible and would be better off if it died
>>
>>15615887
Nothing. We're all fucked.
>>
>>15615868
It's no wonder anime sucks when you can make as much money working at whatever the Japanese equivalent to Walmart is.
