Her whole story is about fighting for people to remain human like she did at the cost of her royalty and family. It's a bit shitty that it was originally a moral issue about inmortality but was switched to "some robots are inherently evil".
It is never explained how she was revived multiple times in the original show.

Where did you get the idea that she's a robo
>>
>>15613898
>Where did you get the idea that she's a robo

It's outright stated in the movie and even in the show it's alluded to that her body isn't normal.

>>
>>15613945
The show, manga and two prequels are all about her being human against all odds. It's pretty much the main character trait in modern versions besides smiling too much while hugging little kids.

I don't know about the movies, I didn't feel like watching them right after the show you know, but I've heard they completely change the ending and are soft retconned in the third one to follow the rest of the franchise.

The introduction of widespread, easy access to the Internet is what finally brought it to its knees. It made every development since 2008 possible. For the first time, every Tom, Dick, Larry and Susan could just whip their shit out and be online, blogging and tweeting and what have you. Nothing was immune to this, 4chan least of all. Post length dropped to a mere tens of words. Investment in those posts dropped even further. Bans, already simple to circumvent, because all but completely meaningless.

>>15613971
I only watched the movies and the prequels and thought they tied well with each other.
Eternal Fantasy is absolute shit though, I can't accept those eyes/mouth designs. I could not find the complete manga anywhere, only read some chapters to get that "the journey, not the destination" feeling.

Is the manga ending much different from the anime? Since the anime ended before the manga, I didn't even bother.

Also, the "new manga" that gave birth to pic related; has it ended? Is in hiatus? That whole "toki no wa" shit doesn't help in the slightest.
>>
>>15616780
The first movie is famous for contradicting the ending of the original and turning stuff from the begining into the climax. The idea is giving it a cohesive plot with set ups and developments but it was a bad move as an idea and in execution. First because the original material didn't have that appeal in the first place making a sequel product that took out the original audience. And second because the way they did it contradicted the message of the original, a story about forgiveness and apreciating fleeting things (in terms of friendship, goals, hardships and happiness, concluding with Maetel adopting a new child to teach in front of Tetsuro and him saying goodbye with tears but a smile) was turned into a revenge plot with Maetel glaring potholes to make Maetel something to Tetsuro in terms of plot.

Maetel is supposed to be the voice of maturity and acceptance, opposed to Esmeraldas who takes actions to create the world she wants.

I'm 2 eps from finishing SSM and I'm not sure how it could set itself in continuity at this point. Every new installment seems to try to turn it less into 999 and more into a Harlock kind of story.
>>
>>15616857
>>15616780
Oh, and I haven't checked the new manga yet. I got the feeling that what I loved in the 70's show came more from the anime writers than the original since it feels so different from matsumoto's kind of deal. I think I'll try to get with it next.
>>
>>15616780
Eternal Fantasy is not a sequel to the movies.
It's an adaption of a manga that's a sequel to the original manga.
>>
>>15616863
No, the 70's show is based on chapters from the manga. Except it adds a bunch of contradictions and Tetsuro is constantly getting kidnapped in the same way.
>>
>>15616873
When I said that what I liked felt more on the anime side I meant little kids being kidnapped in easy ways by mature women.
No, I'm joking. I haven't read the manga, it would be the only matsumoto series that is more about exploration than fighting, I'll check the manga if you say it has that ikekai feel.

>>15616864
For what I've read the third movie adapts the second manga but starts as a sequel to the movie canon. The franchise is filled with weird ideas about how to make a sequel.

Yeah, the motivations for Maetel to leave in the end of the first movie don't make sense, since she comes back with the same body in the sequel.(everything indicates that was a load of bullshit, so you are right about the plotholes) But apart from the very end to the movie, the rest checks out. And the second (Adieu GE999) really gives you some closure about the whole affair, making allusions and references to SSM, AND it's new material.

I had the same feeling when I saw SSM. The only thing that it lacks showing is how Maetel reapproches her mother to make that world-exploding gambit she did in the movies and manga. (I have no idea how the anime ends)

That's wrong. It adapts the first 1 or 2 volumes of the Eternal arc.

Leiji's manga aren't exactly action packed...Queen Emeraldas does much the same with her going to different places and seeing weird shit.
>>
>>15616905
Maetel just wants to find a pure human that given the chance would reject immortality so she can convince her mom that robots aren't OP.
The idea that robots are inherently evil or that you become mind controlled isn't part of the original. Robots are assholes because they are rich and can do anything, and there are tons of peaceful planets entirely human. There wasn't any plan to slave the two galaxies, or any other major conflict. All of that is added to make the spin off action oriented with clear cut villains to defeat.

I still have to watch the movies. Is it true that they make Maetel a robot with the body of Tetsuro's mom? That's super fucked up as an adaptation but also just as something to have in a show. Don't make her Ed Gein.

Less action in the manga but more fucked up deaths. Manga adapts some chapters while changing things about them. Kodansha USA is publishing it and the next volume comes out next month. It's also been scanlated. The beginning of the manga tricks you into expecting an overall story, but it becomes an episodic manga with no real ending. There's a oneshot in the Kodansha edition that makes a reference to the Galaxy Express.

Wait, so you are telling me they don't explode any planet at the end of the anime? I thought they did that in the manga.

That is something else that was wrong with SSM now that I think about it: the humans-turned-machines under Promethium die, so she replaces them with "pure made" machines... And then she returns to mechanize everyone who wants it afterwards. That is kind of strange.

About the Evil Empire thing, it wasn't like that in the first movie too, they just started shooting things up in the sequel after the first planet went to hell.

The thing with Maetel's body was never fully explained. Maetel said that she was using a clone of Tetsuro's mother's body and that's why she looked like her and how she was immortal and at the same time not a machine. Maetel's true body was supposedly frozen in Pluto like all the others, and that's where she was going at the end of the first movie; saying the next time they met, Tetsuro would not recognize her.

...And of course that is never adressed in Adieu GE999.
>>
>>15617020
She's explicitly her sister there. But Harlock also shows up without earth being occupied by aliens which is his reasson to be in space, so I was wondering if Esmeralda had her own continuity.
>>
>>15617036
I don't think there's any particular contradictions in Queen Emeraldas. I know she's dead in the Harlock manga timeline
>>
>>15617034
Woah, I really have to see the movie. I though the pluto body was a red herring or a random woman who made Maetel sad or a plot idea that got dropped.

She explodes the planet with the dad capsule, that's in both. But she is not Tetsuro's mom, she rescues him and helps him get revenge finding his mom stuffed in a wall like an animal in the first episode (children cartoons, you know).

In the end she tells Tetsuro that he has matured, kisses him in the mouth and telks him to wait in the 999. Then he gets a letter telling him she must start another journey and sees her in the 777 with another little kid. As both trains move away he screams goodbye to her.

I don't know which is the manga ending tho.
>>
>>15617046
What? Wait, the Harlock manga happens after the destruction of prometheum? B-but he helped destroy it...
>>
>>15617051
Tetsuro's revenge happens in the movie too, but halfway through the movie because Count Mecha had a magic teleporting castle which only Emeraldas knew where it would appear. It was... a much bigger event, as he was the mechanic empire's hero.

Maetel certainly wasn't Tetsuro's mother, but as soon as she explained that she was using a clone of his mother's body, I couldn't help but think she was a body-hopping abomination turned like that by Promethium. But after all it was a load of bullshit never to be mentioned again.

As far as Wikipedia goes, you just described the manga's ending to me. I thought it was different, but I suppose Leiji gave them the ending for the last episodes (march 1981) before putting it in the manga (november 1981). If that's the case, he's a pretty cool guy for sparing a lot of headaches.
>>
>>15613687
That gives Tetsuro a lot of importance. Like, that was a ton of effort. In the show they say that Maetel regularly brings them new boys. I can't see her putting that much effort every year or so.

>If that's the case, he's a pretty cool guy for sparing a lot of headaches.
But then they made the movies. I really want to find an interview explaining what was their game plan.

Why are you trying to connect a manga that's pretty independent from GE999 with GE999? Yeah, he shows up in GE999 but you might as well think of it as different continuities.

Also, I'm not sure if Harlock even helps destroy it in the manga or if it was just a selling point for the movie.

He was important, it was with him that Maetel went on her last trip to her mother's planet before destroying it. (Planet Promethium in the anime, Planet Maetel in the movies) But as you say, it would have been a lot of effort, so they must have retconned it as it stopped being important.

>But then they made the movies. I really want to find an interview explaining what was their game plan.
While they managed to keep thing clear between anime and manga, Leiji isn't know for being simple. There are, after all, a lot of Harlock continuities with different plots and he appears everywhere no matter the time and place like >>15617215 said.

The thing with the movies is that the first one with the original events was released in 79, and Adieu GE999 was released in 81. Since Adieu was released after the anime ended, i believe the movies's reason to be was to expand on the universe with Adieu, which they did. (Even Tetsuro's father appeared in this one)

And in Adieu GE999 they started to tie Maetel and Emeraldas' backstory to Queen Millenia, by putting Planet La Metal in the movie and explaining the story with the two planets that later would make sense in 2004 with the release of Space Symphony Maetel. Promethium in the movies made two Planets after escaping La Metal: Maetel (using Maetel's essence that she stole in SSM) and Great Andromeda, which they destroy in the second movie. And SSM makes a lot more of sense when you pair it with the movies.

For a long time Adieu was the only thing in GE that represented a true sequel and gave it closure. And with good reason.

>>15617227
Sometimes, I believe this man is just trolling people. They go and give a backstory to her just so he can say something like this and make everything even more confusing.

The only right way to watch Leiji stuff is truly to just read/watch and disregard everything else, it seems.

I find it fun to try to make sense of the "continuity", but I think most people understand that you shouldn't really care that much or judge each anime through the others. I feel a bit cheated that the ovas and stuff aren't relaxing visits to weird Bradbury planets so I complain, but I get why they went with this route more or less.

It's a shame they chickened out in SSM and made the new character the sacrifice instead of using it as a way to connect with the not so human Maetel in the movie. If anything saying "fuck it, all the anime outside of the series is it's own entity divided from the mangas"

>>15617298
Yeah, you just need to learn to stop worrying and love the mess. Maybe I'll watch the anime someday for the adventures in those different planets, but since I know the thick of the story I'll just keep watching Harlock stuff. Watching SSX now; good stuff, but I don't think it will live up to AomY.

Yeah, SSM was just: Let's end this, Maetel has to board that train. It was very different what you would expect from the original.

It's easier if you separate them into multiple categories:

Galaxy Express Series (manga)
Queen Millennia > Galaxy Express > Galaxy Express (90's ver)

Then there's like Space Symphony Maetel Legend, the former basically being a remake of ML, iirc. These go with either manga or anime, I think.

The Queen Emeraldas manga might be connected to the Harlock manga? Not sure if they give specific dates to when they both take place.

Queen Millennia movie contradicts Maetel Legend and is different from manga.

Harlock Saga is basically its own thing but makes lots of references to the metanoids and has lots of similarities to the Eternal arc of GE999. Although a lot of people share the same thoughts of the manga not making much sense in parts.

Series will sometimes reference each other but have some contradictions so you can think like each timeline has many of the same major events. Like Tochiro's fate.

There are at least 3 or 4 different origin stories for how Emeraldas got her scar. Also different origins for how she obtained her ship.

I hear that Miraizer Band explains Leiji's concept of time so that might be interesting.

So we can have more or less decent Leiji threads as long as the OP is about sex and implied mental issues?

That page looks really good. Is there enough extra stuff to justify reading the manga if I already saw the OVA?

Their images are low quality and badly-curated because they don't have real file systems.
They post links to shitty mobile sites. Their posts are riddled with uncorrected spelling errors.
When given a link to whatever resource they've asked for, they whine that they can't use it because they're on a phone and need further spoon-feeding.
They don't read the threads completely because the huge lettering, imprecise flick-scrolling, and their crippling ADHD causes them to gloss over everything and ask questions that were already answered.
They can't multitask or do research to avoid looking like an idiot because loading up a bajillion tabs and browsing them all without ads either doesn't work or isn't as quick on the phone, so they don't bother, and spew incorrect and easily-debunked nonsense more often.
They're the leading cause of shitposting.
They stream their Chinese toy commercials instead of downloading proper subs.
Their only familiarity with vidya is shitty gacha games because half of them don't own a PC, and half of those who do only have a laptop with integrated video.
They're all obsessed with social media, which doesn't have a fucking place here on my weeby secret clubhouse.
They're even obnoxious when you're not on 4chan; they're the ones holding you up at a traffic light or at a restaurant because they were too busy fucking around with their phone to pay attention to driving, thinking about their order, or otherwise performing whatever task someone without the attention span of a squirrel would be doing in any given situation.
Productivity's down because these assholes are slacking off at work, staring at their phones when they should be working. Now they have to draw more hours to get the same amount of work done, at a lower quality, which leads to customer dissatisfaction and prevents employers from taking on additional hands. They'd be fired if their replacements weren't going to be phone posters, too.

Fuck 'em.

The manga (at least the original run) is better than the OVA, imo. It was originally published in a car magazine and everything published from that run has been translated. After that the quality really drops in term of art quality.

It's more like Tezuka's Star System.
No matter how they came to be, a Pirate of Freedom will always appear because the Time Rings. And for convenience and recognition it will be Harlock.

Same for everybody else.
>>
>>15617534
OVA are basically 1/10th of the manga
>>

But Tezuka had some internal logic. The idea as that the characters were like actors, you don't question why they have two different roles and if the roles are similar they were just type casted. With Matsumoto it's always the exact same character except that it was taken through a wormhole out of their universe and they never talk about that.

The feeling I get is that he wanted to do something like Tezuka or Lupin but he though about that way after he had all this characters that were pretty much set in stone. So the audience is supposed to deal with it instead of the one writing the story.

For example, if Maetel appeared in different stories without the 999 would be different than having the transportation system that goes from Earth to Prometheum but no one ever takes because it would fuck up that other story to have that option.
>>
I really didn't imagine /m/ to have 49 different users willing to talk about something related to Leiji Matusmoto.

I've no idea what you're saying here.

They usually get ruined before anyone has a chance.

I'm pretty conflicted with the movie versions making Tetsuro not ugly. Him being ugly was kinda the point and a re-occurring theme in Leiji's works.
>>
>>15617626
I accidentally found it.
nhentai has an anorexia tag, it's mostly really ugly or disturbing guro.

For example there wouldn't be a need to create the Yamato spaceship if there were two galaxies fully populated. Why was Harlock's Earth invaded when other planets are protected by the space patrol? Why are 999's robots racists towards humans but once they get in a space ship they don't care that much?

The Tezuka route would be having Maetel, same name and design, as a stewardess in a civilian ship. You keep the iconic look but you adapt the character to it's context instead of pretending it isn't there. And even then Black Jack never had a chat with Kimba, he knew there were limits with how much he could stretch it up.
>>
>>15619809
aya shachou has much tamer doujinshis and his anatomy is supner on point, I guess he did that to get money from practicing bone structures.
>>
>>15619817
>Why are 999's robots racists towards humans but once they get in a space ship they don't care that much?

Not every person who gets a mechanical body is the same. Many came to regret losing their human body and sought to take Tetsuro's.

The reason is that you shouldn't try to put the Harlock manga into the exact same universe as GE999.

The Earth in Harlock was ruled by incompetent politicians who just didn't care. That's why Harlock exists in that manga. You're putting way too much thought into it.
>>
>>15619890
also what does this even mean? Maybe I'm just retarded.

>For example there wouldn't be a need to create the Yamato spaceship if there were two galaxies fully populated.
>>
>>15619896
In the 999 universe humanity and civilized alien races ocuppy hundreds of planets in our galaxy and Andromeda. It would be a huge dick move to see those poor underdeveloped humans trying to cross the cosmos and not even trying to lend a hand. I'm thinking of original 999 and Yamato, I'm not sure if they actually said something about it in some of the modern series but I hope they didn't.

I'm not saying the original stories don't work, I have never been bothered by Harlock doing a cameo somewhere; I just don't find the implementation distracting or funny and I keep going back to it.
>>
>>15619923
To be honest, Yamato was not part of the apparent universe until like the 90's. The only way it makes sense is if the Great Yamato is from another dimension. There's been dimensional travel shown in The Galaxy Railways, I think.

?
>>

He's an ugly, short, poor as fuck kid who gets the chance to get an immortal perfect body and goes through a voyage growing up as a person.

Him being good looking kind of defeats part of the point.
>>
>>15616482
I like skinny + big boobs but that anatomy is just odd... her torso makes no sense.
>>
>>15621754
Bullshit, he's supposed to be attractive in whatever universe it takes place in. Just look at Leiji's self-insert, he's a deformed dwarf and yet every woman wants his cock. Nobody wants to fuck Harlock.
>>
>>15621754
Dude, if you think being hot as a child offsets having your mother hunted for sport in front of you and your dad starve to dead because you can't afford food, you have issues.
>>
>>15621836
Harlock is too cool for poor peassants to aproach him. He should only be seen fucking space gods.
