I really liked the UC OVAs (specifically 0080, 0083, Thunderbolt, 08th MST), but they somewhat require watching 0079 as they are all basically just side-stories of it. You can watch the compilation movies instead of the spending 10+ hours watching the show. And if you liked the movies, then by all means watch the show.

About half of UC is worth a watch; only the second half of the first TV anime is actually good. Rest is shitty meme series pushed by mega-autists

EVERYTHING else, even 08th MS, requires an autistic fascination in the setting. Part of what makes 0079 or Zeta bearable to such a fan is simply the fact that they create more context to apply to the machines and the development of various technologies associated with them. It's the satisfaction of understanding the full historical record. Within that context, some garbage ass looking scene where Quattro Vagina fights two Hi-Zacks is suddenly kind of fascinating. A compilation of dirt quality clips of Amuro killing people in his ugly ass Dijeh is interesting.

People keep recommending 0083 but it's just mech porn. It has garbage ass characters, the only thing that keeps you in there is the desire to see some gritty retro OVA REALROBITS Gundam action. Unicorn? So goddamn dull and uninteresting but the mechporn was godlike.

The UC is a very solid. At least one movie and a couple OVAs are quite flawed but nothing in the UC can be considered absolute shit. The AU is a different story however.

The first series is good for a 70's mech show.
I also enjoyed War in the Pocket even though it was more of a drama than a mech anime.
Every other Gundam series I have watched has been up it's own ass with it's message (Victory, Wing, Seed.) or just stupid (008th MS Team.)

From what I've seen (0079, IBO, December Sky) I might say yes, but on a premise: in its all substance this series is so shonen oriented that you need to have a real thing for real robot to start with. Yes, of course it has higher and lower points from show to show but its not the kind of war story you can expect to fully enjoy as an "adult" viewer, mainly for its lack of comprehensible strategy plans and relatable tropes when it comes to war stories structure.
I would give a try on thunderbolt (series not sucky movie mashup) or MSG/Z and see where it goes from there.
