But it's also really fun despite how trash the game was on a fundamental level. The one shitty part was when you die you'd restart with 30 energy, and grinding up to full just rips the wind out of your sail so it's like you either do good from frame zero onward or it becomes a chore to play. But when classic NES Metroid was good, it was really good.

2 had more the problem of managing to make a semilinear game still hard to navigate without getting lost (fucking Metroids hidden fucking wherever) but thank fuck they came up with the map in time for Super, that was arguably the last big improvement needed to smooth out the core Metroid experience. Well that and angled aiming, I guess.

People should sit through the classic Metroids and appreciate how much quality of life improvement occurred across three games on three different platforms.

It doesn't help that it came out and turned out to actually be really fucking good. I still have a copy I keep on my NAS for when I feel like doing a run through. I'll still be picking up the 3DS one though. I feel the need to support the company and the brand, do my part so they know that there's a market for more.

The first Metroid game kinda felt like one of the earliest examples of those games too ambitious for their own good. They're all like we gonna make this HUGE game and it's going to be amazing and nothing like you've ever seen, and then it turns out they neglected basic issues in their race to make it this cool thing.
