Ok, so...

Start with core series: Macross Plus, Juushin Liger, Dendoh, Giant Robo, Gundam 00 and Betterman. Celestial Being are trying to unite Earth in the face of the oncoming SMTC, but Big Fire is making a power play and the Machine Gear Empire and the ELS are trying to harvest Earth for resources before it all gets nommed. Proceed for 20 stages of accelerated plot, until most of Earths resources are used sending out colony ships, but there's just enough help from the reformed ELS for the heroes to get Gunbuster and send out a desperate mission to blow up the STMC with a McGuffin from one of the other series. But they also get trapped in the resulting black hole...

It is X hundred years later. There's a short interlude to do Roots of Ambition, then we find the Frontier Fleet stumbling onto the black hole, which has a crack in it because why not. Vajra accidentally open it up and our heroes pop out. They rush back to Earth only to find Earth is sealed by the Spiral King and F91 is happening is happening in the remaining colonies. After initial shenanigans, they end up on planet Altair, where they find that the restored Gear Program has created Golion, but Galra are fucking everything up, so the 5 young pilots who helped the heroes launch into deep space are now Golions pilots. Then there's a round trip through the galaxy, to SD Planet, and whatever planets Alone Again happens on, to gather enough plot tokens for a finale, where Bestman has gone Full Giant Naked Rei and is about to smash Earth over AntiSpirals head. A ridiculous fight ensues, then a dying Nia drills through time to send the original heroes back to their era, and make sure things work out for everyone.

In a special deal with Sega, Border Break is essentially the Originals here, with a few Banpresto characters piloting stuff from the original cabinet to start, upgrading to stuff from the latest version 10 stages from the end.

This is probably way too much plot for one game to handle, DESU.

...they just fucking left Kankel alive on Earth? How? And does that mean Lamia and whatever living Bettermen there are only join you during the final few stages?

To be frank, I just saw 'Giant White Blob Guy' and thought 'Huh, maybe it'd be cool to make him a rival to Giant Black Blob Guy'. That and the evolution/stagnation thing make it thematically appropriate.

And I dunno, maybe that works? Or maybe its a plot that gets kicked down the road by stuff in other plots, like Big Fire manages to freeze Kankel and he gets out later. Or you beat him without Betterman and before he's at full strength, but the Juushin Liger badguys save a single cell from him, and take it to what will later be SD Gundam planet to help resurrect their leader as Sieg Zeon in the future, and after that plotline he flees to Earth.

Or maybe the Betterman plot doesn't properly happen pre-timeskip. You have Mode Warp as a support crew who deal with general Algernon outbreaks, and Lamia helps them but gets disabled by, I dunno, Sharon Apple or something. They take him with them for reasons, time skip happens, you kill the Spiral King and he reveals he's been sealing Kankel. Kankel ruins your shit and you flee earth to gather the Animus Flowers and Lost Betterman, scattered across the galaxy, before coming back to take him on before he becomes the Spiral Nemesis.
I dunno, just spitballing here.

In all honesty, Kankel's more likely to get the Anti Spiral working with it. The thing's "the pinnacle of evolution", but the entire point was that it was a stagnant life, an evolutionary dead end - yes, it's the "pinnacle" because it's basically impossible to kill, but that means it can't spawn things better than itself.

Actually, there's an idea. Through some method they manage to take the thing down (I dunno, all the Bettermen managing to work together and kill it. Pakhila NEARLY did it himself, after all, and he wasn't full power at the time - they just have to ensure they get enough of the thing that it doesn't jib them) but the Anti-Spiral takes a bit of the thing and lets it regrow because it feels some strange kinship with the being, sort of like how they worked with/used the Invaders.

Oooooor Kankel becomes the Antispiral after the time skip, because they couldn't kill it without Oltus so they blasted it into deep space instead, where it became its own planet essentially.

I don't remember the Gaplant being able to transform in Z1, it's just stuck in MA mode until some attack animations.
There's the Messala you can buy, which also can't transform, Asshimar can't either, Re-GZ you can also buy but can't purge its BWS pack.

So here we have an odd scenario.

all the enemies spawn on the East side.

So I send my boys East.

Dominator (Pink and Yellow OKG unit) spawns on the North side after a certain point, which means she pops up behind your guys and starts heading to meet you.

You see that girl with the portrait? That OKG character spawns on the East side.

What's she doing on the North side of the map?

She took the strangest course ever to get there, and now she's just standing there and is sniping Xabungle, Gainer, and the Minerva.

I didn't think anything much of it when it was happening, but now I realize she took such a strange course that doesn't really fit within the context of how enemies typically move in this game.

She basically bugged out, walked in the wrong direction, and then realized what she did and is now trying to make up for it by sniping.

He only tries to kill you once or twice as Rand as opposed to a whole bunch of times as Setsuko. On stage 15, for instance, Setsuko has to fight him as yet another boss on a stage that already has like six different bosses on it, while Rand instead gets Asakim as an ally.

There was no SUGITA RAGE or anything. He just completely ignores Terashima now and constantly gives him the cold shoulder.

The closest was in one radio show where Sugita was there and so was the victim who told the whole story. According to people watching the recording Sugita's typical fun weirdo personality instantly died and he sat there stone cold listening to the guys whole story. His only comment was that if anyone ever did that to him he'd never ever forget what they did.

I've got no interest in Bethesda's two RPG franchises at this point.

Nothing TES or Fallout can do will draw me back in, because the core systems of both are currently very flawed and unappealing in every way to me as a player.

Oh, in that case you're still a bit wrong because the actual latest DS game is 2:R, you should play 3 first though because 2:R builds up some mechanics introduced with 3, 3 is also not directly connected to the original Metal Max in terms of plot whereas 2 is, so it's not like you're losing anything by playing 3 first, and 3 has MOTHERFUCKING ALAMO JACK.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it though, even though 2:R is by far the better game 3 is still very good.

I just want another D where the (relatively sane) villains realize there's bigger fish to fry. Hell, you could easily play X straight and have the Frosts join by default (assuming Shagia doesn't get handicapped at the end, like the show proper.)

Gundam's already seemingly doing with G-Hound in V, where you get Jerid, Lane, Yazan and hell, Frontal. Even BX did it with AGE where you get the Vegans, one of which is Zehart who's basically gone nuts at that point. They just need do it with other series.

Well, the 3DS honestly wasn't too much of a successful platform for many niche games that were previously fine on the DS, Metal Max was one of the casualties.
To be frank though, MM4 is a bit different from the previous games and I can understand why it didn't receive much praise even from the core fans, it's way slower and the fact that they went back to the Saga formula of no generics opting for uniques with their own storyline might have put many old fans off, me included. Another problem is that it didn't really get much attention compared to the DS games, it would have probably done better on Vita since it's the platform for niche games, but then again, MM is a Nintendo related franchise at its core.

Hopefully the franchise won't be killed off, if it survived through skipping one generation of consoles, a cancelled dreamcast game and the Saga affaire it might still keep on going outside of that terrible JP mobage, or so I hope.

The consistent rule with Spheres is that all of them act like a somewhat better D-Extractor, giving you a good amount of power for free, at First Stage, then all of them except Leo make you pay a permanent price to use their real power at Second Stage. Leo only makes Rand pay its price for a few seconds at a time, while he's actually using Magna Mode, but leaves him alone otherwise. Once you overcome the trial by achieving Third Stage, the penalty goes away and you gain the ability to inflict the former penalty on your enemies.

That's the point, it's supposed to really fucking suck to own a Sphere. You start going blind, or go catatonic the minute you're not 100% decisive about your course of action, or go berserk the second you get too focused on something, or can never say anything that isn't some kind of lie. Uther's would just straight-up kill him in about a week or two of using it. Land's Sphere only *doesn't* put him in constant intense pain because the Sphere is self-aware and nice because of its previous owner and doesn't want to put him through the penalty.
