Maybe it's just the writing, the music and animation were pretty top notch, at the very least.

Well maybe on /m/ but the mainstream press absolutely rags on it.

Low quality animation even for a OVA of that time, weak plot, disjointed story between the two ovas, needless gore porn etc.

On top of that the director for the second OVA basically took all the credit for both, and he's a notorious hack director, with such amazing credits as 'The Blue Gender Movie'. Geist is basically compared to a poor man's Chirico in a lot of reviews. Combine that with the awful late 80's early 90's dub, and the fact it got this reputation as early DVD splatter porn, it's not got a great reputation.

But yeah, on /m/ most people look past the shit and like the designs, and cool dude doing cool things.

The setting could use some fleshing out really, and the second OVA is so goddamn trash..
