CG is most likely the reason they neglected their 2d team. Toei gets a lot of shit, but they're actually smart. They know it's the future of anime, and they invested heavily in it.

These videos show that they're among the best when it comes to 3d animation in the industry. They also understood that their anime shouldn't look like video games, so not going full 60 fps should be a no brainer, and yet others do it just for supposedly "smoother animation", but smoother animation can also mean a lesser cinematic experience in many cases.

I think the ideas were interesting but went way too deep into them to the point it was distracting. The original elements overshadowed the Mazinger elements which is what turned many people off. I like the ideas but things like Zeus and alien invaders felt really unnecessary is a way to change ancient Mycenae civilization creating monstrous machines. Zeus himself felt really unneeded and it felt like it just made Mazinger and Kouji less important.

Also the most interesting take on Mazinger lore is the Shin Mazinger Zero manga's.

I mean, we have Mazin Emperor G to work with now. If I was dp, I would make a new Mazinger ova series that shares its continuity with Shin Mazinger, except many years later and I wouldn't sell it as a direct sequel, but a rather a new universe. I wouldn't even put Shin in its title.

I prefer Mazinger being a mazin, a force of nature that embodies robotics and man's choice to be either a devil or a god with that power. The different universes, the gruesome fate of Kouji becoming an undying android, outliving his own flesh in order to continue being the paragon of justice, how every universe revolves around Kouji and Mazinger, that there is an innate link between the two, all the best ideas they played with that are just the foundation of Mazinger so they can be the the series we love but very different.

I want this movie to succeed and rather than be a sequel to anything I am glad it's it's own thing, and I hope moving forward they either build off this movie or keep making new fresh ideas. I want this series to set in stone that Mazinger gets the Getter treatment, where the story is the same basis but it's always very different in where it goes and how it's executed. And maybe if this succeeds we could get a similar treatment and revival for Getter maybe?

Nous étions sur le point de signer pour la télé. Mais là, la condition était qu’un magazine accepte de publier le manga. J’ai donc arrêté la série papier que je dessinais alors pour me consacrer à Mazinger. Mon rédacteur en chef n’était pas content mais je l’ai persuadé d’accepter ce nouveau projet.

When I was a kid, I watched a lot of Atom and read manga with robots. I told myself that when I became big, I would draw robots. But I didn't want to copy Osamu Tezuka. To be accepted in the robot artist circle, I had to do something new. It was both a challenge and out of respect for my masters.

Go Nagai always wanted to draw robot manga, but couldn't, because everyone who could have published his work thought that robot manga was overdone and it would only be accepted if it was an animation project.

After doing some initial work on his concept, he then took it to Toei so an anime could happen, but also on the condition he could publish the Mazinger Z manga.

Anime happened, Nagai got the go-ahead on the manga, and boom.
