What's up with Mechs and Space always being put together?
Why do most /m/ shows and series have a strong attachment to Outer Space?
What is it about giant metal dudes that makes people think "That motherfucker belongs in Space"
>>15576005
Well, part of it is Gundam's legacy, obviously. Part of it is just because in space a giant robot is a less impractical concept than on Earth. And part is just because robots are cool and space is cool, so why not combine them?
>>15576005
It didn't really use to be this way back in the 70s, basically all shows were set staunchly on Earth barring maybe the last 2-3 episodes
But I guess by the time Gundam rolled around, people began to realize that mecha almost inherently increase the scale of a conflict, making some conflicts too big to contain on Earth alone. That and it was probably an attempt to cross over with other sci-fi elements. It's a little strange when there's enough advanced technology to build a giant robot, but not enough technology to leave the planet.
Is there a mech series where they try to go to the earths core™? One where that's the reason for mobile suits™? Or did I just come up with the next great series...

Space Opera x Mecha is a marriage made in heaven.
>>15576032
Something vaguely like that happens in Mazinkaizer SKL
>>15576005
If you have the technology to make mechs, you should probably have the technology to go to space.
Hell, we already have the latter while lacking the former, so it should be a given that mechs in space is the default.

>Is there a mech series where they try to go to the earths core™?
To what end? What would be there worth getting?
>>15576005
Because "Technology to build and power massive power suits=Technology to move to space easily"
Because mecha are sci-fi, and space is its favourite setting.
Also studios are cheap and copypasting space during random scenes is less time-consuming than having to actually draw landscapes and cities, it's also the reason for Zeta' panoramic cockpit, having to draw the cockpit details was more time-consuming than just copypasting sky/space.

Striking at the heart of the mechanical lizard people!
Maybe because 60 foot tall Gundam robot-men look silly fighting on the ground. They're too big for practical surface conflict, so it looks less silly in space where there's no visual cues as to their size.
>>15576005
It saves on backgrounds and animation. It's way easier to make a fight where everybody can just float around with minimal movement and there's no concept of up and down. You don't even have to worry about location continuity when you're in space.

Culling the Dinosaur Empire?
Giant robots are cool. But giant robots is space is even cooler.

i always thought that highly praised final fight with the gouf was a bit wonky, especially the way he spidemans off some planes, and the gundam pulling its own arm off was a bit much.
>>15576005
Apart from economic reason, thematically space age=advance tech

Painting a 60 foot tall robot-man in camouflage doesn't make it much less conspicuous. They just aren't practical ground fighting vehicles at that size.

>Painting a 60 foot tall robot-man in camouflage doesn't make it much less conspicuous.
But it does?
Why else paint giant metal boxes tan color when we send them to the desert?
You can save on walking animation when the robots are in outer space

>because robots are cool and space is cool, so why not combine them?

>no visual cues as to their size.
But we want to feel like they're big

Here I made you a diagram.
Giant human robots spamming missiles, shooting each other with lasers, and having lightsaber duels in space is pretty sweet.

That scaling seems a bit off. I can't tell if an Abrams includes the machine gun in the total height or just up to the turret's hull. At minimum 6 of them stacked equals 48 feet on your chart.

>Resorts to insults because someone didn't call your robot-man by its proper name
>>15579595
Yeah, lasers and explosions looks much cooler against the black/dark blue background.
>>15577600
We technically have both and they're both at very primitive stages.
We're barely able to send a single mech to Mars

Calm your boobies, woman.

>>15576032
Not mech series per se but there are plenty of hollow earth stories with advanced civilizations living underground and they usually have some form of mecha.
>>15579588
at 60t, which is basically Abrams weight, that thing would ahve to be made from papier-mâché and wires....
>>15576032
Well there is a movie called The Core, and well, uh, they use a machine drill snake to go to the, ah, the core.
>>15576005
Some machines aren't feasible in gravity. They would literally crumple under their own mass

AMBAC was a concept based on momentum in space that was used to justify Tomino's space opera with giant robots (the former was his wish, the second was the wish of his bosses) and it just never stopped.
It's kind of like that one friend that started saying "howdy" when he was drunk once and just never stopped.I'm that friend.
