No. Playing this game seriously, you need a stick. I remember when I was in Hong Kong trying to learn FB and MBON and I asked my local friends to teach me to get better they were shocked to hear that I didn't have a stick and advised I just give up until then. Gundam Versus might be more friendly but if there's characters who are reliant on holding onto Charge like Zudah and Zaku III in the past game, playing pad is nearly impossible.

Spent most of my time with the G-self though I like it, the Space pack is a fun alround unit, the reflector can hit heavy and is fun midranged, not to mention the crossbone esq eating of beams, and the fact that it can transform into the Assault pack is neat.

After having taken the hour to play as Marasai, G-Self, Kimaris Trooper and Barbatos I don't really have any desire to play it again on Saturday. I just feel like I've already got as much out of the game as I ever will. The only other new suits I'm interested in are G-Arcane and Hot Scramble. It just feels so hollow and uninteresting playing with suits you have already played to death but this time WITH NEW ASSISTS. imo if you're absolutely going to buy a stick cheaping out on a stick defeats the purpose of getting one in the first place. I wouldn't recommend getting a stick exclusively for one game either.

But I've been out of the arcade stick game for a while now so I'm not entirely sure what a good stick costs these days, but if ps3 sticks still work then you should be able to get a good one for a reasonable price.

I still think you're better off just playing pad with a different control scheme unless you have a particular attachment to using an arcade stick.

gundam versus on ps4 is a game i wanna really get into since i want a really fun multiplayer game to play. plus, i have a couple friends who love fighting games as well and i wanna play with them, but playing on a controller feels like complete dog shit.

But holy shit why did they make MEPE last like 2 seconds before running out? About the only improvement I feel is the R2 guarding slash, but losing out on extra MEPE and having the cost jacked up to 400 doesn't feel like it makes up for it.

This is a reboot meant specifically for consoles. There's no purpose to the dual inputs anymore. The controller has enough buttons. Literally every genre outside of fighting games operates just fine without dual inputs.

Dual inputs are in part a balancing mechanic. Since you have to push multiple buttons to use certain attacks it limits your ability to do some of them while performing other actions.

An easy example is not being allowed to use your main, sub, or special shooting because you want to use your charged main attack. You can get around that to some extent by immediately cancelling the startup of CSa but that costs time and boost, which still restricts action.

You're damn right I do. Fighting games are the only genre that not only clings to an interface that was outdated two decades ago, but actively presents it as some kind of selling point. I've never quite understood why.

Sure, if you force me to string together six directional inputs in as many frames if I want to use an attack, I'll learn to do it. But it's an entirely unnecessary layer of obfuscation in the controls, and I fail to see how it improves the gameplay in any meaningful way.

I don't have a problem with complex controls on principle, but they should serve a purpose. Fighting games can have plenty of depth without relying on the lazy solution of obfuscating the controls.

Again, these are all things that work just fine in other games. Hell, look at Gotcha Force. It's pretty much the gran-daddy of the Gundam Vs. series and it did everything perfectly. All abilities were mapped to single inputs. Nothing accidentally triggered anything else, regardless of the player's skill level.

That's because it was designed for consoles, and controllers. It holds up insanely well.

I can understand people with an attachment to this franchise wanting things to stay the way they've always been, but what's the point of rebooting it for consoles, (SPECIFICALLY for consoles,) if it's not going to change anything or take advantage of the platform?

If it's going to play like the arcade games they might as well have just ported Maxi Boost.

Or hell, offer players OPTIONS. It would take no time or effort to give the player the option of mapping everything to solitary buttons or using dual inputs.

Smash Wii U did that, with the option of doing smash attacks with a dual press. It's not programming wizardry.

I actually found the limits of the controller being tested this time.
Doing charge inputs on a pad without designating alternate buttons for A and B is fucking cancer.
Now that every suit has a new button (Striker), I need to find somewhere to fit that in.
If every move had it's own button, the limit would have been exceeded in Full Boost. Thanks to this input method, I don't need to map AC to anything because my thumb naturally rests on A and C anyways.

Dual inputs serve as both a balancing measure (that intuitively conveys the logic behind restrictions imposed) and a way to save space.
It's not the only way to do that, however (see: Rise of Incarnates). But it's the one the developers have gone with.

Having more configuration styles doesn't particularly seem like it's the best way to handle things. I mean, if the game is made for console and the console's default controller is the pad, and they assign all these shortcuts because it's implausible to actually hit these combinations like X+Triangle on-reaction, why not just make each button do an action like it's already trying to do?

I really don't think they thought it through much at all. You don't have to look much further than the addition of the assist button as a completely separate thing, which is somehow put on R1 by default when R1 used to be AB.

They should know they have charge moves. If you have a CsB, you can't be using AB or BC at the same time, but their default control scheme puts assist (something you CAN use) on R1. Why not put it on L1 instead, since that was the button that wasn't a previous shortcut in other games, and lets you have easy access to a guaranteed-open input while claw-gripping to charge A or B?

That's hardly relevant. Sure, those aren't bad things to have - to the contrary, I'd point to canceling as an example of a mechanic that adds a huge amount of depth, rather than just being complexity for the sake of complexity. But a game can have those things without requiring a dozen inputs for a single attack.

But he's not arguing about remapping buttons, he's arguing about dual inputs.

Despite making a game for the PS4 rather than porting an arcade game, they treat the default dualshock 4 user for this game as a second class citizen already, as per usual. The intent is clear that the pad player doesn't and can't use dual inputs effectively, which is why they have every single dual input assigned to a shortcut button on the controller.

If they have all these shortcuts, why have dual input on pad in the first place? They expect you to use shortcuts, otherwise the defaults wouldn't be X+Triangle for AC or Square+Triangle for AB.

It's honestly just lazy.
