He was pretty prolific so I don't think what's been translated does more than scratch the surface since he's got a lot of small stuff here and there that might be bad. Overall his stuff is pretty great, i would say the worst of his work I've seen is Devilman Lady or Devilman Saga.

As for hitting Rock Bottom, literally never. He is one of the absolute richest and most famous mangaka to date.

I didn't read a lot of Nagai yet, but second half of Great Mazinger (the actual Great stuff) seems pretty weak compared to his Mazinger Z.

That means nothing. Most of it is still trash. Almost an equivalent to Roger Corman career. Even if there's a few decent titles among it, the huge majority is nothing but a huge pile of shit. Quantity over quality.
>>
>>15577328
>the huge majority is nothing but a huge pile of shit
Just like your life
>>
>>15577328
The only similarity between Corman and Nagai is that they were both prolific and both liked exploitative/crude stuff. The difference is that Nagai never struggled for relevance or money, Nagai is one of the most well known and successful creators in Japan and created several massive franchises/titles that had worldwide success. To hit rock bottom you need to be desperately making attempts for relevance/money, something Nagai has never and will never have to do.

The quality of his work its subjective and up to personal taste, of course I get the feeling you likely have read/watched few of either creators' works so to you they are shit either way.
>>
>>15577464
This. He mostly never did a bad thing IMO. Whether you like it or not, he's always had a clear vision for his works and has fufilled everything they were meant to be, even it was trashy/campy
>>
>>15576950
It's actually the oposite for me. Mist Story is one of my favorites. I love when Uncle Go does horror
>>
>>15577464
>>15577476
Nagai would not have any worldwide fame at all if it was not for Toei. He was just attributed way too much credit for other people's works very loosely based in some random idea he had. His OVAs were much closer to his actual work and were generally disliked everywhere. And the only reason people buy his manga these days is because they're nostalgic about Toei anime. Even Nagai was ashamed of this fact and ended doing Grendizer Giga just because Moebius thought he had anything to do with the Grendizer anime.

Lovely Angel hands down. That's his worst work.
>>
>>15578636
Even if we take Toei out of the equation and say all of his manga is crap and that he's just an idea man, stuff like Mazinger Z, Devilman, and Cutie Honey are examples of things that resonated in the industry with effects still being felt today. Even as "random ideas" that's good enough to deserve some praise I think.

As a point of comparison he's not a walking ego like Stan Lee, soaking up the praise for the blood sweat and tears of artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and at least he did more to personally bring his ideas to life than Lee ever did.
>>

>>15579421

>>
>>15579454
Even when he still owned it, he never brought it up ever again, unlike Groizer X and Govarian which were not by Toei, and yet he still remembered them.
>>
>>15579454
I hope someone subs the anime, at least. The manga's shit, but the anime seems pretty sick.
>>
>>15579505
Okay, let me go over this one more time. He created the manga, so it counts regardless of whether he still owns it or not. It counts whether or not he gave a fuck while writing it.

Also, Liger's anime was made by Sunrise. He refused to work with Toei for a long while after they took his name off of Gaiking's credits.

>>15579516
I'd definitely give it a shot if more episodes were subbed. I admit, I have a soft spot for late 80s action anime.
>>
>>15579628
>>15579516
The anime is pretty solid. The second half suffers a bit from playing down the organic elements and hand to hand combat. Ryu Dolk is lots of fun. Most of the best action and episodes are in the first half. The one where Ken has to kill his friend amid bizarre homoerotic subtext is easily the most memorable part of the show. I think it's episode 8.

To be honest, Nagai feels more sincere when he jerks off his own work than Imaishi does. While I loved all his stuff pre-Trigger, I think it was Luluco that made me go from "this is fun!" to "Jesus Christ this shit again," and mostly because of how much I liked RRK. I felt cheated when every episode was just a reference, and I've never had a more groanworthy line than "ikimasu, trigger-chan."

A lot of his retreads are kinda bad. It's strange because when he just continues the story or works with someone else it turns out great, but when he is asked to make new entries for his other stuff he just keeps making Devilman over and over again with whatever the IP is (or making Devilman into a power armor series). But that was mostly the 90s and early 00s where you couldn't be as goofy as Nagai like to be, his stuff since then has been more on point.

>>REEEEE
>>stop trying to take the earth from demons
The point of it is that from Nagai's perspective he wanted to make a story that could explain "why a loving and just God could allow such tragedy in this world." Nagai always has had a rebellious side to him so he wanted to ask "what if God is the bad guy and demons are innocent?" I think the idea is better executed in Devilman particularly since it focuses more on human's place in this struggle which is more interesting in my opinion and he explores the themes of what makes a human more in depth than anything in Dante.

Also don't use ree on this board, please.

>The art looks stale, devoid of life and expression
We looking at the same page? Because I see a lot of strange creative looking creatures matching forwards, all with differing intents in their eyes. If there is one credit that I give Nagai is he comes up with cool designs, and that beastly/grotesque characters and robots are his speciality. It's a big reason why to this day I think Devilman has some of the best panels he's ever done. Now they he's going back to his comfort zone in recent years I think he actually may be at his personal best height in art.

I don't see how it invalidates his views on the manga. If someone likes a manga, then he should give it a high score. That's just normal. By the way, he doesn't even have any of Nagai's works listed as his favourites on his profile page, so there goes your argument.

>Fanboys tend to overrate the manga of their favourite authors.
So by your logic, no manga is allowed to get a high score, because if they do, then they're just a fanboy. I already showed you that the critic doesn't have Nagai as his favourite author, so you can stop saying stupid shit.
>>
>>15596356
>That's way too high.
Pray tell, what's wrong with Amon?
>>
>>15596412
It's a fair score. The story is not great, but the art makes up for it, hence the score.
>>
>>15596419
I quite like Amon and would probably rate it 15/20 mainly hindered by a bit of sloppy writing but overall an interesting story and, in my opinion, the only good Devilman sequel. I can agree with that reviewers score, but I want to hear why this anon is claiming that score is too high.

There's nothing drastically wrong with it, but it's just not very good. Also, the art tends to look rather odd at times.

>>15596419
Art does not equal a great manga. Yeah, I did like the art, but the story was like fanfiction. Bad fanfiction may I add.

Don't you like Devilman Lady?

There's nothing amazing about that. You just have very low standards.

Personally, the art in Amon makes me want to puke. If the mangaka was trying to make it look as grotesque as possible, he's a genius.

Check your eyes first, Pedro. I don't expect you to understand what good art looks like, but your example was a particularly bad one. And I think Nagai can do decent stuff sometimes with a lot of help from assistants, of course[\spoiler]

Fuck off, xPearse. Why do you continually shitpost?

My god, this is so fucking cringy. Have you people even read this? I've seen people on /m/ say it was shit years ago, so I don't get why you people are now trying to say it's good.

Have you actually even read it? And I mean the entire thing.

To be honest I'm just confused why you keep posting 10/10 pages and acting like they're bad
