Unlike your average Zeek MS most GMs share quite a few characteristics. Making variants of the GM isn't as big of a deal as making loads of different MS for different jobs. As time passed and MS in general became more powerful, the need to improve GM performance led to the C type, Custom, II, etc.

The other thing is that technology progression in UC moves stupid fast and Banrise wants your gunpla dollars.

The AEUG has literally no reason to start picking up old Zakus. The AEUG's equipment is either stolen from the Federation or given to them by AE. The Federation is the one deploying old Zakus on Earth in places where there aren't enough GMs to go around. The space forces get the newer and better MS while the ground forces get to use old shit.

Has any manga displayed if any GM variants from the OYW get upgrade to GMIIs then to GMIIIs? I know normally they pull the "Newer internal components" ala Night Seeker in MSV-R.
Would be interesting to see the likes of GM Snipers, Command, or Custom with GMIII shoulder pads and skirt armament.
