It's definitely overrated on this board, immensely so.
However:
It's still very good. Yes, the tactics and the tactical 'genius' aspects are extremely contrived, and the primary arc, Reinhard's rise to power, is relatively boring because of these probably necessary concessions. But if you look at the whole series as being told from the perspective of a future Imperial historian with an obvious and fairly substantial bias, it becomes a more interesting story where you're looking slightly beyond what's presented and wondering about the 'truth' in these events.

Also it can be frustrating on 4chan in particular because half the dipshit chuds who worship it are convinced it's purely a tale of Democracy Bad, Totalitarianism Good. In truth I'd say it's more an exploration of, among other things, the nature of power and the potential for all systems to converge on the same tragic human failures when populations become complacent about their governance or their society rejects change and becomes stagnant or accepting of corruption. Honestly like most things there's a lot of pointless interpretation to be had from it, and if you can get past the obnoxious praise and just focus on how hilarious Bittenfeld is it's loads of fun.

One aspect of the show that's often frustrating is how incompetent the leaders are *both* sides of the conflict until our main actors are in place (Yang & co. as well as Reinhard & co.)

However there are plenty of real world examples where such things happened, so maybe it's a case of the "Reality is unrealistic" trope.
