This probably has been discussed before, but
When it comes to Dancouga I usually see it being called DancouGAR and usually being associated with that name.
so has it always been pronounced as Dancougar or was it a mistranslation for the west?willing to bet it's the later
It's a mistranslation yeah.
In the show it's usually referred to as Dancouga, hell they literally spell it out when initiating it's transformation.
I think this misconception came from when people starting getting some dancouga stuff in the west in which it was referred to as Dancougar, I guess they thought it was a spelling error.
It is the GARfags being autistic as usual

>Dancouga in the west
so is this what you are refering to?

Dancougar would make sense, too, given the animal theme of the mechs. Never mind that it's a Liger, not a cougar.
Were the OVAs ever subbed?
all but one.

And a eagle and mammoth.
well most of them, blazing epilogue has yet to be fully subbed.

>Were the OVAs ever subbed?
The first two were. Not the terrible third one though.

Although Starseeker is making preparations for that one again.
The problem wasn't just mistranslations when it was licensed - the show sometimes just calls it Dancougar in blatant defiance of the combination sequence and the pronunciation.
It's weird.

I think it's due to that thing where when written in Japanese, the final "r" isn't there, but is sometimes implied. GaoGaiGar, for example, is written as ガオガイガー, or GaoGaiGa.
At least I think that's correct, assuming I'm not missing some kind of cue that lets the reader know if there should be an r there or not.

So even the japanese couldn't decide what it was called huh?
>>15491825
Pretty much. I doubt we'll ever sit on a final spelling.
Nova seems to go with the no R though
"Dancougar" is correct, but the r isn't pronounced. It's like a "uh" than an "ar." IIRC dan-kyugaa is a kanji supermove thing, and "Dancougar" is a pun based on that. It's not "dan-KOU-ga." It's "dan-koo-gahr"

this seems like the most legit answer
