Where did the name Gundam even come from (in-universe)? Did they just go
>Guncannon
>Guntank
>GunDAMN

If I'm not wrong, its from the type of material the armor is made from. Or something along those lines.
Also does anyone have what I assumed to be, fan art of the RX-78? I'm looking for one in particular where it had all the lines, the EFSF decal and all that jazz.

I thought the naming was 'dam' as like an actual dam to hold back the enemy?
>>15488696
The RX-78 used an alloy called Luna Titanium. Though, the after the OYW it was renamed Gundarium, in honor of the RX-78's exploits.

IIRC, the "dam" is comes from "弾 " (dan). Which means bullet or ammunition
>>15488749
It could be. In Japanese, the "dam" in Gundam is spelled the same way as a regular dam is spelled (ダム)
I just remember hearing the "dan" explanation a long time ago.
>>15488678
Wasn't it supposed to be Gundom originally?
>>15488750
Close enough.
>>15488749
>as like an actual dam to hold back the enemy?
That's what he was going for, yes.

Freedom Fighter Gunboy was what it was originally called.
>>15489041
>Freedom Fighter Gunboy
>Freedom Fighter
USA USA USA
It's literally gun and dam put together. A singular weapon powerful enough to hold back the enemies (dam) and destroy them (gun). Lose memory of the actual quote

And White Base was going to be Freedom Base.
>>15490438
Moron.
Every terrorist and reprehensible soldier that ever lived called themselves a "freedom fighter". It means nothing.
>>15490438
>>15490561
>>15490759
That's because they were fighting against freedom
"gundam" is a Japanese term meaning "warriors", which often appears in other TV shows, like Sonny Chiba's excellent ninja series, "Kage No Gundam" (Shadow Warriors).

You're thinking of the word 軍団 (ぐんだん, GUNDAN).
That's completely different from Gundam (ガンダム, GANDAMU).
Is the model number RX-78-2 ever mentioned in the show itself?
>>15492192
I think they mention RX-78. I imagine the -2 was added retroactively like with Zaku I/Old Zaku and Zaku II/Zaku.

You're really fun at parties huh
