You're right that realistically, the size of the round fired by Zaku machine guns probably isn't 120mm, even if they've always been stated to be 120mm. It's well known that a lot of the numbers for stuff like that happens to be made up bullshit. Neckbeards have discussed this at length, no need for us to figure that out.

However, Zaku machine guns are able to knock out Federation tanks with one or two rounds. The mainline Ball is not well armored and have always been considered to be fragile units that shouldn't be able to stand up to mobile suit machine guns.

The whole thing behind this scene is that the animators/director are just filthy normies too. It's that simple. They don't know the Zaku MG is 120mm and/or the implications of that kind of firepower. They simply didn't get to that level of autism. They're just grown ass men being hired to do some robot cartoon.

The main "realism" success with 08th's animation was creating the feeling of weight, scale, momentum etc. The MS feel like lumbering metal giants rather than cyborg ninjas. The one exception of course is when the Gouf is able to swing from a core fighter lol.

The Shuddering Mountain (the Gouf Custom episode) is unironically the best episode of any TV Gundam series ever made. I seriously defy you to name me a better one that isn't:

The Gouf fight is pretty awful in my opinion. The whole 08th MS Team has to act like idiots to facilitate it, the Gouf acts like it weighs as much as a bag of sugar several times and it switches focus from a team fight to Shiro's fight. The fact it's resolution is kind of stupid and anti-climactic doesn't help either.

I'd personally prefer Domon's fight against Sai Saici in the finals during G, the climax of 0080, the fight during episode 1 of Unicorn, the Fellini fight in Build Fighters and probably a few others. I'm sure you'll have some problems with all of them, but that's how opinions work.

Zaku machinegun is 120mm, what we don't know is the case length. Presumably it's not super long as that would make full-auto fire rather problematic. The 120 was most like chosen to throw a fairly low-velocity high explosive round that would wreck Federation spacecraft and tanks. Since a mobile suit stands quite a bit taller than a tank it will generally have little difficulty firing onto the tank's thinner top armor. You'll notice though that once MS starts fighting MS both sides end up switching to a 90mm MG or of course beam weapons.
