Shiro's RX-79 survived a very heavy crash with the Apsalus II that didn't crush the front of the chest.

Then his RX-79 survived being smashed and dragged across a rock canyon wall for a while with no damage to the backpack. The rocket nozzles aren't even bent out of shape.

It did lose an arm and it did get banged up, but everything still worked. Even after the reactor was breached, they still salvaged the suit to rebuild into the EZ8.

In terms of armor material, yeah; it is. The extra 100kw also probably gives it some extra torque during intense mechanical movement, which combined with the heavier overall weight, probably means it will come out on top in a close-in fight but in terms of everything else, the GM pretty much comes out ahead.
