English release of Devilman never ever?

With all the more controversial stuff to be released over the years you'd think Uncle Go's magnum opus would get a little more localization
>>
>>15441524
Wasn't there an extremely obscure English release in Japan by Kodanasha?
>>
>>15441524
Why the FUCK is DMP doing the remake instead of the original?
>>
>>15441524
>English release of Devilman never ever?

The Italians are getting a one volume Devilman hardcover edition of the whole manga later this year. So who knows, maybe something good is cooking for the English fans.
>>
>>15441524
Devilman G is being released in English. If it does well, they'll probably release the original as well.

With the new show coming in 2018, I think it will happen sooner than later.
>>
>>15441524

Is Go Nagai's manga released in Spain? If it isn't then I'm surprised considering how much they love Mazinger over there but I'd be even more surprised if any of his works see an English release considering how perverted they are at times then again I'd want it just to see SJWs breakdown over Honey.
>>
Devilman was released in French, but it was a recent re-release.
>>
>>15441621
>I'd want it just to see SJWs breakdown over Honey.

Most manga released over here are ones involving girls constantly getting naked
>>
>>15441524
Nobody gives a shit they just want more Mazinger

Would it even be able to be released raw in America or even the UK given what's in it and that even babies and such are killed in it?
>>
>>15444404

You get novels like Blood Meridian, A Song of Ice and Fire and Eragon published which features babies getting smashed or killed I don't think it'd be much of a problem here in the UK.

I'd be more worried about Cutie Honey though. I can see SJWs having a massive shit storm especially regarding the statue scene.

Why do you people care about the opinions of them?

>>15444413
>novels
We're not talking about novels, are we?
>>
>>15444432
God all those side stories were fucking retarded. Go's little brother is nowhere near as talented as Go himself.
>>
>>15444404
Pretty sure us Amerifats can get away with anything we want content wise as long as its in a comic or book, If Crossed can be here Devilman can as well
>>
seven seas chose some shitty reboot/sequel/whatever instead of the original
even calling it "a good intro to devilman" over the original fucking thing
>>
>>15441621
You're really stupid if you think SJWs are even going to notice Cutie Honey getting released over the mountains of other shit they're busy whining about.
>>
>>15441621
>I'd want it just to see SJWs breakdown over Honey.
Too bad. They don't notice anything that isn't 100% mainstream and constantly shoved in your face. They don't know anything about what they complain about and are just mad that things exist that aren't for them.
>>
>>15441524
OP
There was only one volume published in 1986 by VIZ + a bilingual edition by Kodansha from 2002-2003.

I have both. The bilingual edition is a bit wonky, but acceptable.

The 1986 is incredibly rare and I never saw one in years. Probably was pulled from the market in fear of radical christs.
>>
>>15441524
>>15446852
There's also Danzig's botched Shin Devilman localization under the Verotik label. They ruined the art by adding badly done color and putting obnoxious nostrils on all the characters.
>>
>>15446280
Are there even SJWs that give a shit about manga? I've seen them occasionally for anime but only ever currently airing garbage.
>>
>>15446856
Didn't that make Nagai really mad
>>
>>15446960
yep
>>
>>15445955
That's not the only reason. The main reason is that there isn't a manga culture in the US.

For example, Go Nagai was totally unknown in France and people only ever heard his name through Grendizer. They didn't even know his other works like Devilman and Mazinger. They actually got Devilman released in 2000 by Dynamic Vision but no one paid attention and it sank like a stone.

Now with the availability / accessibility of the internet, information can be much more easily gained about an author, and Devilman was released again about 2 years ago, and it was well received. Manga-news (a popular site for manga news in French) even gave the last volume 20/20 (A perfect score).
>>
>>15446960
Source? What did he say about it?

>>15446852
Isn't the bilingual edition hard to get? Also, there aren't any scans, so can you give a few examples and compare it to the TL? Pretty please.
>>
>>15447122
The article only says he was displeased.

Nagai behaves rather well in public.
>>
>>15447110
>The main reason is that there isn't a manga culture in the US.

Nah, there definitely is one but the industry is not as booming as it was in the 2000s.
>>
>>15447125
No, he's right. There's really no manga culture in the USA.
>b-b-but we have a couple companies
Doesn't matter. Manga is insignificantly niche. It was actually more mainstream in the late 90s and early 00s, but after the death of Tokyopop (good riddance) it's been an even smaller market.
>During the restructure, Tokyopop laid off 39 positions, equating to 35%–40% of its American workforce.
>In December 2008, citing "dramatically low sales" in the publishing industry as a whole
Hell, even American comics aren't doing so hot. Manga is in an even worse state.

>Isn't the bilingual edition hard to get? Also, there aren't any scans, so can you give a few examples and compare it to the TL? Pretty please.

Since I have no other translation, I can't help. It is just feeling by reading the text.

Also, the bilingual edition can be found in Japan still, but it won't be cheap.

I got mine, because I politely asked one Japanese seller via ebay if he could help me.

But the 1986 issue by VIZ is truly a lost treasure, since it was the only official English translation available in the US market.

I was really lucky to get both, but VIZ it's volume is not corresponding to the Japanese release. It stops with Akira's finished transformation into Devilman at the disco.

Furthermore the introduction claimed VIZ wanted to publish 2 further issues on Devilman, so what does that mean?

Only VIZ have an answer.
>>
>>15447782
>But the 1986 issue by VIZ is truly a lost treasure, since it was the only official English translation available in the US market.

I've already said this before, but it isn't. Verotik released part of Devilman.

Print is a dying medium overall, a vast majority of non-academic book stores will disappear within the next decade and print will be a luxury/novelty.
>>
>>15448075

Genius. The manga sections have expanded in all the book stores I've been to in the last few years along with carrying tons of other weeb shit.

What that doesn’t tell you is how much TokyoPop was pouring into ventures outside of just publishing manga. Primarily shit that nobody fucking wanted, like OEL manga and reality shows.

rlly makes u think
It's such a dying market that it's expanded and we're seeing more niche titles published every year.
>>
Even if they are tons of manga on shelves in stores, that doesn't mean people actually buy them.

It's like the VN market nowadays. Yeah, there's a bunch brought over every year, but they only sell "just enough" to keep bringing them over.

Manga was more mainstream back in early 2000s especially because of companies like TokyoPop. If you can't wrap your head around that, then either you're too young to remember or haven't done your research.

>>15448391
Too thick for me. I'd rather have them separate volumes.

Okay. Now that makes me question the accuracy or it, but from what you posted, it does look good. However, the art in those pics look different from what I remember reading.

There's a loose adaptation. The demons arrived on Earth during WW2 and have since integrated into human society. A demon doesn't have a physical body and so must possess and bond with a willing human.

Considering the shit they did they did to folks they hired to make original manga for them, calling them evil isn't too far off from the truth.

Manga sales did go down in the late 2000s but that's far from the only reason TokyoPop shut down. They failed to cut back accordingly, Kodansha withdrew their titles, Borders closed up shop, etc.
>>
>>15450786
Fuck Tokyopoop they set manga translations back. Several translations they made had to have fan efforts to retranslate because the Tokyopop version was garbage, flipped, and sometimes bordered on being a straight up rewrite.

I think the FLCL manga, .hack//LOT and the volumes of Gatekeepers they did are the only Tokyopop manga I still own. I sold or threw so many away because the print quality was just so bad. My Love Hina volumes were practically falling apart when I downsized my manga collection last year and I barely read them compared to Ranma and Ruroken which were just fine.

Do you guys remember when they re-did their site so that it was myspace but for anime loving losers?
>>
>>15452043
The only titles I ever bought from them personally were Lupin III and Cyborg 009. They're still in relatively good condition but I think that's more due to luck than anything else.

>Do you guys remember when they re-did their site so that it was myspace but for anime loving losers?

No, but I don't doubt they would do something like that. Frankly, I couldn't have been happier when that cesspit went under and I wish they would die permanently.

Only ones I own as well. I remember reading Battle Royale manga and fucking hated how many dumb issues there were. I remember there were just several printing errors at really key moments that thank god the person who scanned it went and made translations on their own for the raws of those pages.

I remember I originally turned down reading Parasyte manga because the Tokyopoop version was awful. I remember how they flipped the manga and changed Migi's name to lefty. I also remember it was LOADED with swearing like an amateur fan sub.
