I don't know if it's the case on /m/ but people seem to shit on Stardust Memory and I can't figure out why. The animation is great, the story is about par for the course with Gundam series and the Mobile Suits are all nice. What's the bad part?

>Kou is the least skilled pilot in the franchise
Considering he goes against veterans, including the Nightmare of Solomon, Kou did pretty well. Gato's GP02 had the advantage in close range but Kou quickly figures out the opening in the left side and managed to close it in a draw.
>>
>>15435225
Contrarian shitposting.
We had two or three contentious Gundam shows in succession, so people that got their feelings hurt in the subsequent discussion are throwing shit at the more highly regarded entries in the franchise.
Shit's getting thrown at 0083 and 0080 pretty regularly. Just watch for the phrase 'fake Gundam fan:" it's like a calling card.
>>
Anyone got anything noteworthy to say about the Blu-Ray release? I read that the English audio is the same as the old DVD release, any truth to that?

Probably still going to pick it up, 0083 is my favorite entry.

Kou's fucking scary, actually. Gato was arguably one of the strongest, if not *the* strongest non-newtype pilot at the time, using one of the most advanced mobile weapons ever produced circa 0083, and Kou fights him to a standstill.
Not bad for a kid whose combat experience started that year.

It's actually quite a enjoyable show and executed quite well for what it was: Mecha Porn. However there are some flaws in the narrative. One of which, is that it actually is the (and imo only) Zeonwank show. Zeon, in the form of the Delaz fleet, pretty much wins ever step of the way due to a combination of Zeon hard work, skill, planning and honorable determination, with a little help from the corruption within the Earth Federation. Its undeniable Zeonwank, and I say that as someone who likes Spacenoid movements, though not the Zabis. It makes the formation of the Titans into this giant conspiracy. The Federation may have signed a peace treaty with Zeon, but they are fighting Remnants not only in Space but even still on Earth long after, as we see even beyond ZZ. Forming a specialized anti-Zeon Remnant taskforce makes quite a bit of sense to do without there having to be such a conspiracy. Another is that it has mobile suits with specs that far outcompete the suits that chronologically appear after them. The ending is also quite a mess. Nina gets away practically scot-free even though she betrayed both the Federation and Kou for Gato (which is quite odd when looking back on the series since she didn't even realize who he was when he was jacking the Gundam earlier). The show also tries to partially retcon itself with the sealing up of all the data and records at the end in an attempt to throw out some of these inconsistencies. However, even with these issues still present, I find that you can still just enjoy it for the well-animated mecha action

I still think 0083 is one of the better OVAs (Better than 08th MS anyway, which is the probably the most obvious thing to compare it to) but it suffers from a really weak protagonist, and of course worst girl of all time.
>>
>>15435823
Aside from Thunderbolt, which is obviously newer, did we really have the idea of a substantial Zeonic remnant that was willing to wage a low-key war after the OYW? The Zeta and ZZ stuff is one thing, but it seems like the Gundam-jack was successful because Zeon loyalists were so thoroughly underground.
>>
>>15435866
The ones from Unicorn when they attack Torrington?
They were remnants that had support from The Sleeves
Being in Torrington fucking sucks, they can't catch a break
>>
>>15435877
I meant the part right after the OYW, so between MS:G and Zeta, preferably closer to MS:G than Zeta, with the Titans running around being goons and stirring things up. I'll take that as a no, then.

Point being that you don't create a Zeon-hunting secondary army without a reason to do so. If the Feddies believed that the only dangerous Zeeks ran off to Axis or self-exiled outside the the Earth-sphere, than there's no reasons to allocate resources for something like the Titans.
>>
>>15435894
I dont recall anything honestly, the closest thing would be the game 0081 Battlefield Record
But outside of that not much, looks like when Titans were put on service the Zeon uprisings seemed to stop until the end of Zeta

Rebellion is great, it takes a "The Origin" route for a retelling. Expands on the earth arc to help flesh out the characters. (Ex. Allen lives a lit bit longer and is jealous of Kou piloting the Gundam instead of Monsha)
It also incorporates alot from other side stories and OVAs. Alice Miller from the 08th MST film is sent to investigate the gundam jacking. Matt Healy and Ken pop up in side chapters. Unit 1 gets Chobham armor, being the spotter for Unit 2 and to protect it from the EMP from the nuke blast. Unit 1 also gets aqua gundam addons to chase Gato's Jukon sub for 2 chapters. The Africa zeon base has a Adzam/Apsalus hybrid MA.

Plus it further explains Gato/Nina/Kelly's relationship.

Stardust Memory is pretty great but basically Nina's character causes all of the problems both in the show and out. It's her fault the Gundam gets stolen, she's the cause of Kou being a retard the whole series and actively cucks him at the end and gets off with absolutely no repercussions. It's not that it's a bad show it's that one of the characters is intensely infuriating to the point that it transcends the boundaries of the show itself.

neat setting
great MS designs
great MS action scenes
great cast (barring nina)
plot that begins as an excellent almost Tom Clancy esq inter-war thriller, that devolves fairly unexpectedly into a melodramatic love triangle that was poorly explained, and isn't even hinted at existing until the midpoint of the show.

As explained, this is a retelling that changes the story. In this version of 0083, the GP04G was completed and it faces off with the newly overhauled GP01Fb in a mock fight on the lunar surface. During the fight the GP04G becomes incapacitated due to the appearance of the Val Varo, which leads to it being "stolen".

As far as current scanlations go, it's been taken to a facility where they will probably remodel the GP04G into the Gerbera Tetra. Or maybe even the Gerbera Tetra Kai, seeing as the author is intent on showing off as many variations as he can.

In the anime Anaheim just gives Cima the Gerbera Tetra off rip from the get go. But going off supplement materials, like Evolve, the Feds cut production because Unit 1 FB covered the needs of a fast assault MS.
So in the anime when the Delaz Fleet approched AE (mostly the division comprised of former Zeonic Corp) for a MS, AE has something to barter with.

Optical and laser tracking is still a thing. Both require line of sight and wouldn't really allow for BVR combat, so mobile suits aren't rendered obsolete.

Alternatively, a lot of the missiles seem to be flying in mostly straight or slightly curved trajectories, so it might just be a case of saturation fire. Literally firing hundreds of dumb rockets in the hopes that some will score a hit.

Most elements of 0083 are alright, the animation and fight choreography excellent and the story is standard side-story stuff of things that happen and are erased so as to explain their presence in the main story, though the Gryps Conflict wasn't particularly necessary for the creations of the Titans as the story just served to prolong the 'another Zeon remnant group planning to drop colonies' meme.

The cast of characters is also decent, EXCEPT for the three main and most important characters who also happen to be involved in a fucking love triangle of all things. Kou Uraki is probably the worst Gundam MC not on account of being really bad, but just so fucking bogstandard, there's nothing interesting about him. Any semblance of a personality dissipated after the first episode when he showed a great deal of interest in the Gundam, but after that it's just your usual angst, predictable responses, and so on. I double dare you to do the Plinkett test on him without using the word 'carrots'.

Nina falls under the 'you just can't understand a woman's feelings' category of terrible female characters alongside Reccoa Londe and Katejina Loos where love and other emotions are used as an excuse for a character to repeatedly act irrationally without learning from the consequences, on top of the viewer having to repeatedly suffer through the tired cliché of a girlfriend telling her boyfriend not to go out and get killed. Any sane person would think that was the reason, or perhaps not wanting her suits to get destroyed, but apparently she really didn't want to see Kou and Gato fight? The whole love triangle shit came outta fucking nowhere, and her unresolved feelings driving her to put the Earth's donut supply at risk deserves her the DUMB CUNT brand stamped on her forehead. And then she appears at the end like nothing happened at all.
>>
>>15436524
Gato is the worst case of ZEON DAMASHII I've seen so far. MUH IDEALS literally sums up this guy's character. Not once are his ideals tested or does he ever question them, whereas he simply considers people like Cima not real Zeon anyways. He's only liked by zeeks and fags who easily fall for honorabru characters, and it would have been fine if Gato wasn't completely brainwashed by Zeon propaganda and showed some signs of realizing there are some bad sides to DROPPING A FUCKING COLONY, but instead he believes he's 100% just in doing so. I don't feel any sympathy for a drone, and not a lot of interest either for a character flatter than a loli's chest. What Nina saw in this guy the same way she saw in Kou is beyond me.

Thankfully not the entire story of 0083 revolves around these shitheads, but dropping the ball on the main characters is a fuck-up of massive proportions for what is otherwise an alright OVA. Fuck awful main characters aside, the story of 0083 isn't terribly interesting, but you might like it more if you're a filthy zeek. I should add that the death flags for Lt. Burning were some of the most obvious ones in the entire history of fiction (ha ha we're so happy, ha ha love, ha ha carrots, ha ha my family on Earth, ha ha my pupils, ha ha m- OH NO HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN???).

> 0080 was worst UC entry

G-Savior was technically UC, so... no.

I see it like this:

With 0080 Bandai was like "LET'S MAKE A OVA!" and put all their points into mechanical design and animation with a plot that was about as dumb as the worst episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Then with 0083 they were like "Wow, that really sucked, but hey Top Gun was popular let's rip that off and have good music." So 0083 was watchable.

Then Bandai was like "Wow, people really hated those characters. Let's rip off some from Shakespear." And so they made 08th MS Team, which is basically Romeo & Juliet with giant robots.

I think part of the problem with the Nina-Kou romance, the major problem really, is that she never sides with Kou. The one time she has to choose between Gato and Kou in some manner, she chooses to help Gato. It's entirely understandably why in that one instance she would, since she doesn't want to see her current lover kill her ex, but narratively it leaves a very unsatisfying conclusion because she never acts to "earn" Kou's love. The fact that defending Gato directly helps him drop a colony does not make it any better of course, but a lot of the distaste for her seems to come from the fact the story seems to want the viewer to still see her as a love interest despite never making it clear she is over Gato and chooses Kou when given that choice.

>>15436747

I imagine he means that while it's okay for Gato to choose to believe in Zeon and drop the colony (he must do something to be the villain after all), it should really only happen after some introspection on what he's about to do on Gato's behalf. Doing something that drastic should not be any easy decision, and Gato doing it with no apparent question or doubt makes him come off as almost robotically committed to the cause and kind of dull, since his character has nothing going on beneath the surface.
>>
>>15435225
Mostly because the characters were unlikable. Kou's weakass bitch who gets cucked and goes back for more. Most of his allies are either dicks or boring. Nina is one of the worst girls in Gundam ever. Gato is the only easy person to like and he's a filthy zeek. To the OVA's credit though it was incredibly fun in the beginning but it lost steam really fast.
>>
>>15435538
>colony
Actually, it made the Titans necessary, but only because the Federation was never good at handling things democratically.

Making the Earth dependent on the colonies for food is actually something a lot more level headed than what credit people give the Delaz fleet. (Their "Gihren was right" shit kinda undercuts their realpolitik shtick).

Amazing mechporn, very bland characters with maybe a couple exceptions. I mean like, bland even for Gundam, which as you said does not have any kind of consistently strong writing anyway.

For me the problem of Stardust Memory is that the real reason for the creation of the Titans was not used in the entire series, only in the end. It's a "cool" series, that's all.

does any japan/m/ have context, i don't think the scanlations caught up to this point yet.

Plus from all the dislike of the anime, it seem that the manga fixes a lot of it. Like Nina got interrupted by Orville when Gato gundamjacked Unit 2. So she didn't see his face. Plus explaining early on why Nina is so focused on the development project 200%

Problem with Stardust really is bad characterization of Kou. It's not his skill as a pilot or anything it's how he whines and uses the Gundam like he owns the damned thing than Nina scolds him about how it's not his and how he reacts so childish. This sorta thing was KINDA excusable with Amuro because he was a damned kid. Kou's a soldier in the EFF and considerably older than Amuro but he still acts like a kid.

Sanders tries to walk away at that point, but Bate punches him in the face. Sanders goes nuts and has the necks of Adel and one of the EFGF guys under his arms. The brawl continues. Then we come to the picture in >>15436195.

Sanders is holding Kou by the jacket, and is about to punch him when he sees Kou's face and is reminded of Shiro. Right after that, the MPs come in and arrest everyone.

There's a picture drama that came out with the 0083 BDs, if you care. It's a new scene from the Rebellion manga where the EFSF is having a skirmish with the Delaz and Cima fleets when Gato is returning to space onboard the HLV.

Neat little fact, the anti-ship rifle that the GP02A is holding is the same anti-ship rifle that is shown in the hands of Char and his wingmen during the Battle of Loum scenes in the Origin movies.
>>
>>15449656
Just started it and I'm really liking it so far
I hope that in the future 0083 gets a remake ands its based off Rebellion
Though I don't know if Sunrise is willing to do remakes, they'll rather just pick other novels and mangas to animate
>>
I liked the first few episodes of 0083 but the second half sucks. Kou is an annoying main character. They try to have him have the same period of doubt and confusion that other Gundam MCs undergo but it comes off as bizarre because unlike most Gundam MCs, Kou is an adult and a member of the military, not some civilian teenager who ends up piloting a robot. Nina sucks and Gato is annoying in his boneheadedness. I'm fine with Gato being a douchebag - after all, he is the antagonist - but there came a point where he just became boring.

Furthermore having Operation Stardust actually succeed in dropping a colony on Earth is one of the biggest Zeonwanks in all of the Universal Century.

then why did you bring up amuro's age? Plus Kou enrolled into a military academy to work with MSs quicker than regular enlisting. He was sent to Torrington base right after graduation.
