No relation. 009-1 is pretty much only a thematical follow-up to 009 (while 009 was about cyborgs opposing an evil arms dealer organisation, 009-1 focuses on cyborg espionnage).

2 volumes into Cyborg 009, and it holds up surprisingly well ignoring some very crude art in the first volume. Black Ghost or whatever looks so much cooler than Skull man. Like, his mask is cartoonish but it doesn't look flat out dumb like Skull Man's. The pacing is pretty rapid compared to other stuff I've read from him, too. No panels that are just paragraphs of dialogue crammed in over a white panel.

Also, later on there are some odd changes that occurred possibly due to outside reasons, such as a chapter that redoes at least some of the origin stories, and GB suddenly being a kid like in the 60s TV show for a while.

Just finished it. It's at the limit of passable. The pacing is absolutely atrocious, the plot is paper thin. It's like they took the plot of what should have been a two-three episodes arc and stretched it out for a full 12 episodes season.

As for when the rest of the show will be done? You could ask Nanto of Skaro Hunting Society nicely, but I don't think he'll get around to it for a good while still.

Something I'm starting to notice with Cyborg 009, is that 009 literally fucking does everything and most of the Cyborgs have no reason to exist. The Mythos arc presents this perfectly, just about every kill is his. I was expecting each cyborg to be pit against their equal but instead it's just 009 tanking everyone.

Ishinomori can't really write for more than one or two protags at most and keep it balanced in different circumstances. But at least 009 doesn't have an annoying catchphrase like Lucky does.

They fought a dinosaur 1-2 volumes ago, why is she surprised? Do I blame this on chapters not being placed on publication order or Ishinomori being an inconsistent writer?

If we're talking about Ishinomori stuff, I guess this is a good enough place as any to ask.

A lot of Ishinomori's characters are cyborgs, but we're never really told how "cyborg" they are. I mean there are obvious ones like 004, but then there's the other 00 cyborgs and Kamen Rider, which are a little less obvious.

Like, from "subdermal implants" to "brain in a robot," how extensive are they?

Originally, there was only Birth - Assassins - Vietnam - Mythos. Everything else was added later. Those were the stories published in Shonen King before the series was canceled the first time.

I could have sworn a lot of these were longer. I guess it's because they're all better known for the toku/anime adaptations than the manga?

Oh yeah, I remember that too. It was from mixed race delinquent escaping from prison to famous racer who suffers an accident, it was not? And the 2001 anime version was him as a orphan incriminated with killing the priest who have taken care of him, and jumping a cliff while running from the police.

I really liked the original versions of his origin, as a outcast of japanese society for being the son of a american soldier with a japanese woman, leading him to juvenile prison. He even seemed with more personality in that initial chapter. But the whole thing maked more sense in the first decades following WW2 and American ocupation, and it probably got outdated as time goes by.

That prologue was made by request of Shonen Magazine, for the readers who didn't read the original run and needed a quick introduction to the series. It's not considered canon anymore, but still included in modern editions. The new ending arc was also supposed to replace Mythos, but fans consider both as part of the canon. Because of that, the 2001 series tried to fix it by adding Artemis in the place of Helena. That idea was a scrapped concept from the 1979 anime.

Yomi Arc finished. I'm actually satisfied with it as an ending and it feels like what the Mythos arc should've been and it was nice to see Not-Skullman do something. I also liked the focus on 004. Overall, it was consistently entertaining and I liked the adventure aspects of them exploring the underground world.

Not sure what to expect from other arcs.
