The actual episode where Hayate downs the White Knight was really good, but him taking him down was the worst part of the episode and felt completely unearned. It happened too soon after he killed Keith and didn't pay any character involved off in any way.

Hayate doesn't really earn any of the things he gets throughout the entire show. He never takes his training with Mirage seriously nor does he ever become a good enough pilot without the use of Freyja's song yet he still lands a job as a Delta pilot. He acts completely oblivious to Mirage's feelings yet she likes him for some reason, same could probably be said about Freyja although he at least confesses himself but at a really shitty time which made the final episode feel contrived. He also never suffers through the aspects of war, he has literally one conversation about the act of killing and even after that, he goes the pacifist route for no reason even though he declared he would join the war so he could end it which was supposed to be a very serious decision. Oh yeah, despite saying that, he contributes little to none in the final battle and this guys is supposed to be our hero. I miss back then when protags started off angry and autistic before working their asses off and becoming well rounded men. Hayate had that potential in the first few episodes but it went nowhere fast.

Messer and Kaname really should have been the main characters. I mean shit, Messer's characterization is absolutely nothing special either but it was unbelievably refreshing to have a proper authoritative figure who enacts proper discipline in his pupils instead of just giving in to the MC's bullshit like Gamlin did. Messer is basically all I wanted to see in him.

Sadly while Messer tried to enforce discipline, Arad basically undone everything Messer instilled when he let Hayate dictate the squad's formation and refused to let someone else join the squad to replace Messer. Which was dumb as shit, and Arad or Mirage should have immediately told him he was being childish and that replacing Messer as a squad member didn't mean replacing him as a person.

Where's the fun in this? Messer was an excellent soldier from the beginning, putting a rookie as the MC to form a bond with the rookie idol is more relatable, and putting Kaname as the feMC wouldn't work since she's the composed, secretly self loathing or whatever character which would be pretty boring and very shoujo-ish. If I liked to have drama I'd like it in little doses and Messer's focus episodes and littles scenes there and there were perfect and sufficient.

The show should have been focused on Hayate's development from an uncaring child to a reckless pilot relying mostly on his comrade's power hax to finally an accomplished soldier. I liked that he got to kick Keith's ass, but I was expecting him to grow more, to finally get that relying on Freyja's power isn't enough and that he was far from attaigning Messer's abilities but the second cour and that drama about singing happened.

Freyja's development was decent although the uta wa heiki issue was NEVER resolved but to be fair, that arc had no business being there because space muslim was right, Freyja should have just realized there's a difference between singing to promote peace and singing to commit genocide. As for Hayate, he had more room for development than Messer. Compared to Messer's antisocial behavior, Hayate had the potential to work on his flight skills, his problem with authority figures, his outlook on fighting and killing, his feelings for Freyja, his rivalry with Bogue/Keith, and trying to find a way to end the war like he declared. Oh and of course refining his fucking dance moves. They had a lot to work with and they did nearly everything wrong. What makes things worse is that some of it is Freyja's fault because she pretty much took over as the primary MC. It's like what happened in Frontier, only much worse.

Episode 13 had the big battle with the Elysion transforming and all so it wasn't a complete wash. Just up until that point. Then it goes straight downhill after that episode.

There are a few standout moments after that like the Freyja birthday one (I still love that episode even if it was the nail in the coffin for Mirage) and the one where Freyja goes full Uta wa heiki for the first time and Hayate Var's out. Besides those two episodes, the second half is a wash I agree

They certainly weren't on par with what came later (personally, I think the tv series peaked in the late 20s and early 30s), but they still weren't at all bad. I had a lot of fun with the early episodes.
