Can someone give me advice on where to start with Ultraman?

haven't watched much myself but Ultraman Ace looks pretty good, over 40 eps on YouTube

Most of the Ultraman series are really good. What type of scifi/toku series do you like?

I like trippy headfuck stuff, but that's generally hard to find in toku. Characters are the most important thing to me most of the time.

My favorite toku series are Kamen Rider W, Kamen Rider Kuuga, Power Rangers RPM. If we're counting kaiju (which makes sense, given the premise of ultraman) my favorites are the original Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra, and 90s Gamera.

Some people say you need to get a few Ultraman shows under your belt in order to fully appreciate Ultraman Nexus. I think if you're familiar with the genre it has a lot to offer. Very character oriented, it's the Ultra series that I think comes closest in tone to Heisei Kamen Rider, with just a little bit of neon genesis Evangelion.

Honest reccomendations are pretty much what the top list has to say.

Ultraman: Cause it's the start of the phenomenon. Honestly though compared to the first seasons in other toku shows this series has aged like fine wine. A cast of lovable and memorable characters. Most of the kaiju in this show make return appearances in many other shows. Good action scenes. Has its goofy moments and problems, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. It's also super easy to find. DVDs are dirt cheap and I believe Shout Factory is about to/just released a really nice set of the complete series. No reason why you shouldn't watch it.

Ultraman Tiga: Came out in the mid 90s so it's a more modern product. Basically the same formula as the original Ultraman so watch it for the same reasons. The difference between the two is that Tiga actually takes itself far more seriously then the orignal. It has an overall darker and more serious tone, but it isn't nearly as dark as another series I'll talk about later. DVDs of this series were released when it was brought to the US for a dub by 4kids but they're out of print so I don't know how hard they are to find. Also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STAY AWAY FROM THE DUB! It just about ruins the show, flat jokes and 4th wall breaking all over the place.

Ultraman Nexus/Ultraman (2004): If you're looking for something even more modern and want a grim dark, character driven show. Then look no further. Nexus and it's movie is probably the darkest Ultraman ever gets. It forgoes the "monster of the week" formula to tell an episodic character driven story. Most of the time it even takes multiple episodes to put down the new kaiju they face. This is also a very adult aproach to Ultraman and tackles questions about what would happen if Ultraman actually was real. Nexus the series is can be streamed on Crunchyroll so go check it out there. The Ultraman (2004) movie, a high budget pre-quel to the series, is alot harder to find and watch. You don't need to see it to enjoy the series, but together I think they make a good package.

Ultraman Mebius: A longer show than the others on this list, Ultraman Mebius was made in 2006. Mebius is essentially a giant love letter to the original show run of the series Ultraman - Ultraman 80. The characters and kaiju from those series make guest appearances. It's filled to the brim with references, and bad ass action scenes, a overall Tokustatsu goodness. Altough seeing some old and goofy kaiju along side newer characters may throw you for a loop, and the impact of seeing these original Ultras in their glory again after so many years will probably not have the full impact if you had actually watch the original shows first. But regardless this is the one toku series who actually did an overall great job with it's anniversary season. Looking at you Gokaiger and Decade. The entire show is streamable on Crunchyroll.

Something of most recent, I would recommend Ultraman Orb, unlike the other recent stuff that was targeted at a younger audience, Orb has an older lead. People who watched the series had nothing but good things to say about it.
