Well maybe I will be more okay with it in the anime, just really wasn't expecting it and it felt weird in the OVA. Possibly I also just disliked they spent one of the seven episodes on that and thought it was the overall weakest episode of the OVA. I also wasn't a fan of the military coup episodes, I prefer the proper balance of police and slice of life line in episodes 1, 2, and 7.

If I remember correctly I should watch the two movies before moving on to the anime, right? Also I know the anime and ovas+ movies are different universe with same characters before anyone says anything.

Oshii wrote the funniest Patlabor episodes though. He went full Oshii on the movies and wrote wacky shit for the TV series and 2nd OVA to blow off steam. Like the Red Spectacles episode where Ohta gets amnesia or the one where the repair crew devolves into civil war when Sakaki locks up all their porn.

The alligator episodes are some of the best Patlabor episodes

The OVA is basically a sampler for all aspects of Patlabor, the other entries do parts of them in much more depth and focus. The movies are more like the serious two part episodes near the end, the TV series is mostly wacky MOTW and workplace comedy with a focused story arc in the second half, the second OVA series is a bit of both.

Okay that's good because honestly I wasn't a big fan of it being TOO serious or the kaiju episode of the OVA. I'll probably watch the movies this weekend then dive into the anime. I want some more hijinks from the cast, when the show has a sense of levity feels like when it's at its best.

I don't get anything about Patlabor. It's like it goes out of its way not to show anything interesting or exciting. Ok, I get that it's supposed to be quiet and slow, it's a universe where giant robots are glorified forklifts. But in slice of life-ish shows, the appeal is the characters, and we never learn anything about these people other than "this girl loves her robot!" "this guy's a gentle giant!" "this girl is good at shooting stuff!" etc.

the first movie is a totally serviceable police procedural thriller, but everything else...

Those episodes are there almost precisely because they catch you off-guard.

One of my personal favourites is the "Ingraman" episode, which is an absolutely beautiful homage to Ultraman.

It's totally fucking perfect, too - the animation and sound effects they use for the Ingraman vs. Grif-fon fight are SPOT-ON. Such a flawless recreation of the final fight from the last episode of Ultraman - and then it pulls the rug out from under you by making it not only a dream, but the dream of someone different from who they were leading you to believe it was.

I can re-watch that episode any time and it never fails to elicit some hearty chuckles.

the TV series having more episodes means it will be all over the place, it's still good fun though, you have the more grounded serious stuff, some wacky episodes, some really bizarre episodes, some good ol police stories detective stories, really there's so many.

my fav episode is actually a fucking review episode in the mid section of the show, it's done in such a way that it doesn't feel like a review episode and is actually quite fun and charming. Courage and Wisdom!
