Is Nausicaa the greatest sci-fi manga of all time? How come nobody here ever talks about it?
>>
Because Mecha means giant robot

>>15406409
It's good. Probably the best thing Miyazaki's ever done. What else is there to say? Even the fucked up insect incest porn doujin is amazing.
>>
Because most people watched the inferior anime version
>>
>>15406417
No it means Devilman and Go Nagai

>greatest sci-fi manga of all time

>Hasn't read Akira
>Hasn't read FSS
>Hasn't read The Origin
>Hasn't read BLAME!
>Hasn't read Gunnm
>Hasn't read anything from Tezuka
>Hasn't read anything from Matsumoto
>Probably wasn't even born when any of these above works were written
>Probably only even read Nausicaa because Miyazaki's name was attached to it

Serious question, is this like the fifth manga you've ever read?

Good, not many people are sensible enough to realize Lazy's reputation is all smoke and mirrors and garbage punching scenes.

Do you want him to overhype Nausicaa even more?

It is some pretty tight shit, but greatest might be a smidge too lofty. It's pretty much top ten or even top five without question, though. As for why it's not discussed much here, it's somewhat lacking in the robot/power armor department, which is what is discussed most here. That, and oddly enough, not many people here seem to want to shitpost about it.
>>
>>15406453
>>Hasn't read anything from Matsumoto
Good for you, OP. Nothing of value was lost.
>>
No, nausicaa manga is pretty bad read actually.

At least for me.
>>
>>15406409
It's pretty good, but there are many works as good or better.
>>
>>15406453
>>Hasn't read BLAME!
I love BLAME! and am in the middle of reading for the first time right now.
And while I love it to death and think there's a lot of amazing illustrations, and story elements incorporated into it there's something that stops me from saying it's the greatest.
It's definitely good though, I just wouldn't call it the best.
>>
Because Hayo Miyazaki is a pretentious overrated pedophile

>>15406477

Show us on the doll where he touched you.
>>
>>15406978
It's one of the greatest for sure. The shear sense of atmosphere is unlike any other manga out there.

I don't know how Nihei regressed so much since then.
>>
>>15407720
I've only read a little bit of BLAME! so I can't say if it's an issue there, but in other Nihei works I've noticed his paneling is fucking awful. Action never followed well in Sidonia and fights came off as confusing at times due to massive jumps in action from panel to panel.
>>
>>15407724
I was more bothered by the extreme whiteness and lack of contrast in Sidonia to even notice the panelling.
>>
>>15406409
I love the manga. I've got the whole thing on my shelf. S'beautiful.

I liked it, I finished with that sensation that it was a long but worthy ride. I also personally loves fantastical worlds that mix medieval knights with firearms, planes, tanks and etc. A shame that this is not done more frequently, and when is done, it is generally mild.

The only thing that to me was kind of insupportable sometimes, was Nausicaa herself. Is difficult to me to put it, but, her character starts interesting, but as the manga goes by she becomes more and more like a second coming of Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of Mankind etc etc. She is always too kind, she is always too forgiving, and so on. She becomes too much of a idealization of a perfect person, a saint. Almost all other characters are more interesting than her; Kushana, Yupa, Kurotowa, and so on. And thanks god, the manga gives enough time to them to shine by themselves.

But that's is my opinion and a matter of personal taste.
>>
>>15407806
Not him, but Nausicaa is far more popular for casual manga readers than anything he listed.

She's Miyazaki's self-insert. Many of his MC's suffer from this problem.

Yeah, I know, even if I would not call it a self insert, and more in the lines of his over-idealization of strong female characters. His leading male characters seems to tend to have more flaws and internal struggles, comparatively with the female ones. But even so, manga Nausicaa still beats all the other Miyazaki female leads in this matter.
>>
Why is it so hard to talk about Miyazaki on /a/?

Neither is anything from >>15406453

But Miyazaki's name still sticks.

>it's not even a list for manga in the first place

Same reason as above, none of them are on that list.

So far you have zero proof that any of the above works are more popular than Nausicaa other than using a name/franchise association. To which Miyazaki trumps all.
>>
>>15408026

Because it's a list of films, not manga, you dumbfuck.

Nausicaa is a film too, dumbfuck. And many of the manga listed have films associated with them.

More popular than anything from your list.

I still don't think Nausicaa was in the right when she refused the precursors' help in genetically modifying humanity to survive the Forest of Death's purification process. The people of the current world knew nothing of the damning wars from that era and don't deserve the painful death that results from too pure O2 entering their lungs, and gambling that if humanity deserves to live then nature will find a way is irresponsible as fuck. The Forest of Death isn't natural, it was created by man to purify the Earth of its nuclear fallout after they realized the folly of their war, to give humanity a chance at a brighter future. Nausicaa even used that same nuclear light to destroy this only chance.

Actually I like the anime more then the manga. Don't get me wrong the manga is great, but after the half or so is reached it takes weird turns and gets more and more alien for my taste. The anime is clearer cut and doesn't end with the bitter sweet note of mankinds ultimate extinction.
On the other hand best boy Kurotowa got more screen time. Honestly I could read a story only about him and it would be fantastic

I really like some of the planes' (love the gunships) and armor designs in it. It's too much fantasy scifi for /m/'s taste I guess. how it suddenly veers into magical telepathy in the later parts

https://desuarchive.org/m/thread/15371985/#15372510
>>
>>15408513
Well at some points Nausicaa gets transported into the mental world (via forestman magic) and also hell (though both kinda also exists within the character, what?). Some priests literally have a telepathy duel where one dies. And ghosts/spirits are in the setting as well, a dude could get his soul out of his body to attack others. Not even a pseudo scifi explaination was given, gets really spiritual towards the end.
>>
>>15408561
>a dude could get his soul out of his body to attack others

So you haven't seen ZZ?

None of this sounds remotely out of place here at all.
>>
>>15408561
Sounds like bog standard science fiction to me
>>
>>15408564
Oh, ok. I'll admit that I'm a rookie to a lot of the /m/ shows. Just thought that most people here like hard core scifi(?) (w/ giant mechanical things), and Nausicaa seems to have too little of either.
>>
>>15408589
Scifi and fantasy often go hand in hand.

>>15408589

>>15408593
I was always thought sci-fi was just fantasy, but in the future or current day.
>>
I would love it if it weren't for that ending. Talk about shitting the bed right at the last possible moment.
>>
>>15408800
I thought the ending was what made it great.

To be honest the middle section of the manga was so aimless.
>>
>>15408833
It's not what happens, it's just that it's presented through lame exposition.
>>
>>15408846
Oh, you mean the last page. Yeah, that was kind of half-assed.
>>
>>15408589
Considering how much you see people wanting grunts and muh realism, I can't really blame you. You're probably correct too, all things considered.
