What's a good mecha series for someone who refuses to watch mecha anime?
Something where the mecha are important, but the character drama is what brings you in.

>Something where the mecha are important, but the character drama is what brings you in.
That's most good mecha shows.

Like every mecha anime?
Then you can show him whatever you like.
>>
>>15406327
I have never understood why 08th is on there. I get why in terms of content, but I don't think it's popularity is on par with the others on the list.
>>
Patlabor has character hijinks. The setting happens to have mecha.
>>
>>15406673
its normie friendly even more than SEED

just read the youtube comments of 08th opening

Please take A/Z off that list. A newcomer may look to this image earnestly.

>What's a good mecha series for someone who refuses to watch mecha anime?

History says Gurren Lagann, Macross Frontier and Code Geass. Those shows are normalfag magnets.
>>
>>15406298
Code Geass.
>>
>>15406298
Patlabor.

Seriously anyone with taste should like it.
>>
>>15406298
Gundam SEED. It's exactly what you described, and while the character drama is not exactly good, I'd say it's a fine introduction to the mecha genre.
>>
>>15408070
Then why are you recommending it?
>>
>>15406298
>I want to watch a "mecha" anime
>But not for the mecha themselves
These people need to fuck off
>>
>>15406298
I really don't get the aversion of mecha anime. Is it because giant robots are seen as "childish"? What makes it different from every other anime?
Someone enlighten me. I genuinely do not get it.
>>
>>15408156
>I genuinely do not get it
Same reason they don't bother
>>
>>15408156
>because giant robots are seen as "childish"?
That's pretty much it, yes. People unaware think all robot shows are only toy commercials and heavily focus on showing robots on action with 0 plot or characters. Multiple people I know that look down on mecha all really like Code Geass and always say cite that it's different from other mecha shows because "it focuses on the characters not just the robots." It's the same issue with TTGL fans thinking it revolutionizes mecha, an ignorant audience positing their incomplete knowledge as some form of authority.

It's general misconception that causes people to not want to give mecha a try.
>>
>>15408156
Normies perceive mecha fans as socially maladjusted neckbeards and manchildren interested only in power level wank and action scenes full of pew pews, and don't want to be associated with them.

There's also the fact mecha are considered unrealistic even for an anime medium, but from my experience if you're able to do a good sell, present a show as something good that has more to it than just robots and sometimes fanservice, they'll watch it even if it has mecha.

On the other hand if you go full autismo they'll ignore you and whatever you recommend even harder.

That's what it boils down to, really.
>>
>>15408156
These people also watch shounen all day.
>>
>>15408156
Rainbow pew pew robots are for 3-year-olds while true anime such as SAO and Naruto are for mature people such as me, feeling enlightened yet?
Lurk more faggot.
>>
>>15408156
Capeshit: OK
Giant robots: bad

Don't bother understanding normalfags.
>>
>>15407867
>Macross Frontier
I never knew what the fuck Macross even was until I came to /m/. Even Robotech was only known by memory of seeing the PS2 game in a store once. I think you are severely overestimating the popularity of either form of the show
>>
>>15406298
>>
>>15408524
Capeshit is only ok to normies when its live action on the big screen. Can't tell you how many people run around screaming how they love X Superhero so much.

"Oh have you read any of the recent X comic?"

"Lol nope that shit is for losers."

The sad thing is these people will then have a huge influence on comics, games, and other mediums despite only going to see the blockbuster movies.

What is the exact opposite of this? for someone who don't give a single fuck about character drama and want as much fighting and struggle as possible.
>>
>>15411376
>What is the exact opposite of this?
IBO fans
>>
>>15411376
Watch basically any OVA. Mazinkaiser vs. Great General of Darkness comes to mind as one that's basically nothing but one long fight scene.
>>
>>15411376
Mazinkaiser SKL is basically this. It has the foundation that it could have had a very interesting story and characters but instead it's majority nonstop robot action set to heavy and power metal.

You want style over substance, then SKL is the movie for you.
>>
>>15406716
Not really. If you're not interested in the Gundam chronology and the one year war, you're not going to care about it.
>>
>>15411360
As much as people hate that, he does have a point. Most western mechs are generally slow and stuff compared to the japs.

t. liked the live action Ghost in the Shell movie
I hated it but I also dislike plotfags too so whatever
>>

I didn't see it.
Checkmate, fagfag.

There are only a small handful of directors putting out good content, if they aren't on my list, they aren't getting my moviebux.
Especially with how hard it is getting into theaters with the No-singles policies.

Replace Aldnoah by Eureka 7 at least.

Pretty much what I've been told by others too, are Frontier and Delta that bad?

SDF suffers a bit for me simply because the action is held back by the animation.

Plus was nice in that it was and odd subject with the trials and all, but the characters were asshats and I felt it should've just focused on the trials rather than adding the AI thing at the end.
>>
>>15408156
normie here
Mechas are the hook, but I don't put the mechas that high in the scale, so I take a look at the enviroment and if it's another generic military setting I lose interest almost immediatly. Most of the mecha animes I've seen weren't because of the mechas themselves but because the cast/setting was unique enough.
