Why aren't there more live action shows/movies like Pacific Rim?
There's like a few in Japan but none have been localized in the West?
>>
>>15387455
Because that's more a Western thing and most Westerners don't care much about giant robots. Hell, they don't usually care for robots either, aside from fear mongering "they'll take everything from us/rebel"

OP here

btw i started watching the Rebuild of evangelion movies (i saw the series two or three years ago).

what next? i was thinking about tetsujin-28
>>
>>15388078
Just give up on the rebuild movies and watch the 2004 Tetsujin series. It's a much better use of your time because Tetsujin is actually good unlike the rebuild movies.
>>
>>15388101

No problem. If you are from /mu/ you should definitely check out Macross if you haven't already. It's mecha with music as a core theme/element in every show. You will stop at a point though, unless you enjoy Idol shit then you can watch every series.
>>
>>15388395
The original Macross TV series, Do You Remember Love and Macross Plus are probably the easiest recommendations.

Outside of that, Macross 7 can be a chore to get through, Zero is a bit eh, and your enjoyment of Frontier and Delta may vary. Haven't touched Delta, but Frontier just wasn't to my liking by the time I got to it.
>>
OP again here

I started downloading the three Gundam movies.
Thanks for the replies.
>>
>>15391654
Just remember older shows are gonna look, well, old, so be prepared. A lot of them are worth it though regardless.

We had a similar thread here or maybe on /mo/ a day or two ago, with someone asking about Gundam specifically. Common idea was either the first series/movies like you're doing, or Gundam 00 if you need something more modern to ease into.
>>
>>15391654
Good job son. Remember, SSSIIIIEEEEEEGGG ZEEEEEOOOON!
Watch VOTOMS if you want something more gritty military, although it's more "Solid Snake" than actually being IN the military
>>
So instead of starting another thread I'll ask here. How do I get into Brave? Just watch all of it in production order? Is there a chart?
>>
>>15391701
None of them have any connection or continuity. Commonly recommended first series are Da-Garn, J-Decker and GaoGaiGar. Goldran is great too, but very goofy, which some people may not like. Also, Might Gaine has gibberish subs for the later part of the show.

>>
>>15392822
Series if you have the patience for older anime pacing and animation quality dips. Movies if you just want the gist of the story. You'd be missing out on some quality 0079 weirdness if you just did the movies though.

Or you could hold on a couple years until they just remake the entire original series.

It's bogged down by several garbage entries and my autism is immediately triggered by it making mention of other stuff in a series but Getter Armageddon/SvN aren't underneath. Honestly the gay chart is legitimately the best recommendation chart but I don't have it saved. Here's one that has some genre division so it's a bit better for entry level people.

Armageddon being absent from just about all these makes me shriek like an autistic child.

My point is watch Getter.

The only problem with a lot of these charts is that they're old or shove everything in there, still a lot of good shows on them, though. But they're missing newer stuff and some series have just become less relevant. Also no indication as to what'd be more digestible for a "recent fan", if that matters to you. Your watchlist is probably a fine starting point though, it covers a few of the big ones.

Also this is just a personal rec, but maybe check out Fafner some time, once you're more familiar with the genre. It's got a lot of content but gets pretty damn good.
>>
>>15396711
You forgot Super Robot Wars OG. Well, the 2 anime TV series and the OVA are only worth watching if you played the games.

And SRW regroups plenty of licenses together. Playing a non OG SRW is the best way to get acquainted with mecha.

If it was absolutely essential to have some 10's mecha on one of these lists I'd throw in Build Fighters, Unicorn (From an animation/OST standpoint), Mazinkaiser SKL, Gargantia, Samurai Flamenco, Symphogear, and MAYBE Daimidaler.

Too many recent /m/ shows have been either just "meh" or have been memed to death that their inclusion would cause riots
>>
>>15397376
>or have been memed to death that their inclusion would cause riots
Poor Argevollen and Kuromukuro
>>
>>15397376
>MAYBE Daimidaler
That should never be recommended. Even as a gag series it's a bad show.

>>15397386
Both of those didn't succumb to memes they just were boring/meh. Argevollen toes the line of just being a bad show for like 16 episodes then it kinda picks up but it's still nothing amazing, and by then it's too little too late. Kuromukuro revolves around such disinteresting characters and plot points that the moments it shines doesn't make up for its overall lackluster quality.

Heybot and TB24 could be added, if they can stick the landing (Heybot at least, there is slight uncertainty over the latter getting an S2).

OP here

today i watched the first movie.
great story, great characters, and animation better than i expected. Overall a great watch. Will watch the other two soon.

I don't like Amuro, like at all.
Char is perfectly likeable, and i felt sorry for Garma.
Also i liked the good ol' nazi imagery associated with the Zeon, until the end (the whole "sieg zeon" scene was overkill).
>>
also: in case i want to continue in the Gundam franchise.

I understand that ideally i should go 0079 -> Z -> ZZ -> CCA, but that's A LOT of stuff.

browsing around i seem to understand that the series considered the best are Unicorn, 00, and Turn A. (anything else?)

Unicorn is set in the UC timeline, but can i watch it just after the 0079 movies or will i be missing stuff?

00 and Turn A are in its own timelines (right?). Can i jump straight to them?

00 is a fine AU that you can jump right into. Turn-A too I guess but it has a few nods to Gundams before it however.

Unicorn is watchable with little knowledge of UC, but you will get lost when certain events are called back to. UC Gundam is best watched in production order.
>>
>>15396711

00 is the best Gundam entry aside from the 0079 movies. Consistent pacing and quality with all the best of modern mecha's cliches.

I'd highly recommend Z, as it's not only one of the better TV series in the franchise, but is a fantastic sequel to 0079 that fully involves the characters from it. Despite general opinion, ZZ is actually great as well, but not something I'd recommend if you're strapped for time.

Other than that, just use the Gunda/m/ chart to see for yourself what attracts you. I guarantee you'll find something new you'll like.

00 OVAs? No such thing.
Unless you're mistaking that for 0080 and 0083, which are completely unrelated UC entries made years before.
And the movie is the finale to 00 proper, don't expect it to be the greatest thing ever though.

>>
>>15400248
Those are just compilation films, they're the 50 TV episodes recut into three movies. Unless you want to save time, there's no point in watching that. I don't even think any group bothered to subtitle them.

As you can see from the article you linked yourself (or not since you might have wanted to avoid spoilers), these compilation films cut out a lot of content. There are some newly animated sequences, but it's not as though there were any bad parts in the TV series that needed to be changed.

What board are you browsing that thinks this? Because I've never seen anyone on this board like all 3 of these shows really, at least not to the point they consider them all the best. The Turn A crowd probably shits on Unicorn the most.

>>
>>15400624
posts, charts, graphs, reccomandations.

what do you think are the best Gundam series for /m/ ?
>>
>>15401197
Overall /m/ regards 0079, War in the Pocket, and Zeta as the best on the franchise. There's a lot of shitposting that decries them as the worst but it's very blatant and obvious shitposting.

Not considered the best but pretty will liked overall are also G Gundam, Build Fighters, and 8th MS Team. Most Gundam shows are pretty well liked and have fans or detractors through out. After the ones I've listed the fanbase gets more murky with Turn A and Reconguista G being very controversial due to them being SoL rather than conventional Gundam, also they often get compared to
Overman King Gainer which many argue is a far better mecha SoL than either of those. Notable is the fact that Greco probably has the most controversial standing of any of the Gundam series on this board with very violent detractors and staunch defenders.

The only series that are pretty much agreed on to be terrible are Wing, Seed, Seed Destiny, and Try. Wing is mired by a god awful cast of children that are inexcusable in how aggravating they are with Heero possibly being the worst Gundam protagonist in the franchise. Seed is basically a reimagining of 0079 if told by someone with a railroad spike through their brain. Things are just generally boring because Kira is literally infallible and does everything perfectly. Destiny could have been good if not for Kira coming back, usurping shinn as an protagonist, and making everything boring again. Both seed shows are also hideous when it comes to the humans due to early 00s animation. Try just feels like a time slot filler, it's really lazy and mostly focused on harem antics.

That's what I would say the board thinks overall, ultimately it's up to you what you watch.
>>
>>15401276

>>
>>15387635

>>
>>15387455
>>15387635
>>15401342

OP here, as absolute newbie to the Mecha genre, i can only think of Pacific Rim and Transformers.
(loved PR, liked the first Transformers, didn't see the others)
>>
>>15401338
No problem friend, I'm still only about a year into mecha myself and I'm not even a big fan of Gundam really. Mecha is a really fun genre to explore and it goes pretty deep. Just remember ultimately if you like a show even if you or others can see it's bad, if you enjoy it that's what matters (just don't be a faggot and preach that a bad show has no flaws). And this board is pretty alright with giving recommendations once you want more if you just list what you like.

Also just a clarification, the reason that Gainer is brought into the conversation about Gundam SoL is that Tomino (creator of Gundam) also made that. Greco gets a lot of shit especially because a lot of it feels like of it was just pulled from Gainer.

>>15401342
>>15401351
Transformers sales are starting to slip in the west, people seem to start getting tired of them and are also realizing they all kinda suck. They still smash the box office but they are made with China in mind now. Pacific Rim is a far better film but it did lukewarm in the states, was saved by Asian sales, and now is doomed because PR2 looks like a steaming pile of shit.
>>
Quick update

i still have not managed to end the trilogy, but i laid up my plans:

0079 movies -> 08th ms -> 0080 -> 0083 -> Zeta
-> (ZZ - unsure bout this) -> CCA

this way i should get a lot of early uc, and all of a decent quality
>>
>>15403905
You should honestly go 0079 > Zeta > Give ZZ a shot > CCA > War in the Pocket > Stardust Memories > 8th MS Team. We say production order for a reason and it's because they usually give context for/are referenced by later UC titles.
>>
>>15387339

>>15401276
>Zeta

if they are prequels... shouldn't they be watched as such?

(yes, if i had to binge watch star wars, i'd watch
>I-III, RO, IV-VII
surely not
>IV-VI,I-III,VII,RO
that's retarded)
>>
>>15403957
if you watch stuff by production order things seem to line up a bit better than chronological order for some reason.
>>
>>15403957
That's a really dumb thought process because these are prequels made with the original in mind. They call back to the original and give context to everything. The Star Wars prequel trilogy is especially egregious in this regard because it often devolves to "hey remember thing? Well look there it is!" You watch by production order because it's the intent and thought process of the author that even though X comes after Y chronologically, Y is made with you having seen X already.

Production order is the way you should see just about anything unless the creator says otherwise. Should you watch the Lion King prequel about Timon and Pumba before watching the original film, even though the prequel is meant to give additional context and framing for the original and was made with the idea that the viewer has seen the original already? Of course not.

The rule of /m/ is watch things in production order, and its a good rule. And this goes for just about all series since if you tried to watch Votoms chronologically rather than production order you would ruin the entire experience.
