Can we have a Star Trek thread?
I used to watch the shows with my dad when I was a kid, but I could barely remember them. Watching through them now as an adult and they are leaving a completely different impression.
TNG was boring as hell as a kid, but it is my flat out favorite now.
Isn't there a new show coming soon? When does it start?

IIRC it's another shitty prequel
there will never be a good Trek again, sadly

Defiant always was coolest to me
I just saw its design when I was young and something about it really appealed to me

I wonder what the limits of individual wealth is? Does everyone receive basic income from the UFP? I mean, they describe a currency and say it isn't a currency because reasons.
the Nebula class looks like a sneaky jew from the side

It looks like an RPG sourcebook.
Best Romulan ship design ever.

Is this Voyager from the "Year of Hell" episodes? Those were two of the greatest episodes in that whole series. It was some of Janway's best too.

I do like the aesthetic of the pre-Federation Vulcan ships.

Could never stand the defiant. Felt like a big shuttle, and it is such a boring design. Nothing trek about it at all.
>>15352136
When I first watched Voyager I had kind of hoped that the journey, with no possible way to reach a Starfleet starbase for resupplies and extensive repairs, would result in the crew using every available technology to keep the ship running, so by the end of the show it's practically another ship entirely with the same name.
I'm kind of sad that didn't end up happening to the extent I wanted it to, but I still think Voyager was a fun show regardless. Janeway's warpath through the Delta Quadrant was always a hoot.

it seems like it's strictly for trading purposes, like if you wanted to buy a Vulcan lute or spend some time on Risa
they need to reciprocate that somehow, they can't just give it away for free to everyone who goes there, and there needs to be SOME barrier to entry and limitations on your stay at resort planets to prevent them from going to shit
>>15356078
this is horribly confusing without context

My first Trek series was Enterprise; I was 11 when it premiered and I fucking loved Shran. Why haven't we had a series that had a non-human captain? And nuSpock doesn't count because that was only a temporarily role and he's a half-human/half-Vulcan hybrid. I'm talking about someone who does not at all look like a homo sapien.
>>15352714
The prequel bit is honestly likely to be the least of its problems. Only the first episode is going to be broadcast. The rest is going onto CBS's online streaming service that nobody uses. (And iirc is also only available in the US) The decision to release online via a shitty service no one uses means the series is DOA.

"Commander, tell me about your sexual organs."
Just rewatched The Outcast. It was a pretty good attempt at discussing then-current day feelings about homosexuality by transposing it into a more relatable framework for non-fags. The end was kind of luckluster, but I guess not every story has a good ending.
Also, the episode touched on Riker and Troi's open relationship. But doesn't Troi sleep around way more than Riker? Seems lopsided.
>>15360643
Riker and Troi are exes who still hang out. They're done with each other like that until the movies because the movies are shit at noticing that the show happened mostly.
Star Trek is inconsistent garbage. The only reason anybody cared at all is because "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" and Bald Shakespeare.
>>15360661
But they kissed on the lips and said that their relationship will never change when Riker was telling Troi about Soren.
>>15360681
yeah that's that imzadi shit
is this your first episode of tng or something
>>15360689
Why are you shitposting? Anyway, it's made pretty clear that Riker and Troi have an open relationship.
>>15352892
That's because it was supposed to look a lot more like a runabout and be a much shorter-range ship, more like the Equinox, in the original concept.

It's from a Star Trek RPG rulebook. It's complete and total BS. The Federation has no currency, everything is free and people make things just for fun or to learn.
>>15360726
>It's complete and total BS. The Federation has no currency, everything is free and people make things just for fun or to learn.
But there are many times in the series where the Federation uses currency for non-Federation establishments and transactions.

What exactly is the point of a dedicated transporter room?
>>15362954
Why wouldn't you have one?
>>15362985
>>15362992
Because site-to-site transporting is a thing, the platforms are obviously not necessary.
>>15363026
>Because site-to-site transporting is a thing, the platforms are obviously not necessary.
It's been shown time and time again that transporter emplacements boost the signal and also presumably lower power consumption.
>>15363026
Site to site is only done in emergencies due to power consumption since it's basically two transports back to back.
>>15353139
you know, i always thought the idea of no currency as being reasonable, but reading this got me thinking.
how can you incentivize a woman to suck your dick if you don't have money to offer her? now, now that's a little crass, but what about if you want some computer programmer to make you a website. or you want an architect to design an extension on your house. or lets say 3 people want a handmade art piece from an artist, but the artist died only making one. how do federation citizens decide who gets the art piece?
Does it boil down to exchange of services? Or exchange of items (back to barter)?
Replicators remove resource scarcity, but they don't remove time/energy scarcity IE your time and energy still have value and are scarce. There's no way they can have no currency.
>>15363114
I agree with you and those are some effective examples of why you would need some form of currency. There's also the fact that replicators still need raw materials in order to function, so nothing is truly free.
My theory is that the federation provides certain services for free to citizens. Clothes, food, shelter and medical treatment, among other things. You could live a great life doing pretty much nothing if you were a citizen. But taking on a responsibility like science, medicine or being an officer would probably get you credits that you could use for non-basic things. Like, say, if you wanted own your own holosuite or spaceship. But that's just my guess.
>>15363414
Looking at this really shows you just how fucking stupid the kids flying the Valiant were.
Perfectly good ship lost because of egotism.
>>15360752
Ronald D. Moore commented: "By the time I joined TNG, Gene had decreed that money most emphatically did NOT exist in the Federation, nor did 'credits' and that was that. Personally, I've always felt this was a bunch of hooey, but it was one of the rules and that's that." (AOL chat, 1997)

The Enterprise-C model had to be thrown together quickly. Andrew Probert's original design for the Ambassador class looked a lot better.
