Started reading FSS recently and am confused as fuck by Fatima

If you want an honest answer, it's just a bunch of inconsistencies. Generally whenever Fatima don't wear their bizarre costumes they're indistinguishable from 14 year old girls (in the FSS Universe). But when they do wear them, they magically lose 30 pounds and become walking skeletons. Even then this isn't always the case, like in your pic. It's because whenever Nagano draws a new set of clothes, he'll often update the character lineart with it. Sometimes the character lineart doesn't even look anything like the actual design from the manga.

In fact if you compare typical Fatima proportions to any other casual anime character design in the past twenty years, there's really no major difference.

Funny enough most modern female pilot suit designs give the characters way more curves than what they normally have. It's all anime magic, but Nagano's tastes go the opposite direction in making them skinnier when they dress up.

FSS had material to work with the weakest link was the creator. He did it all himself at his own pace, where if he had been compelled by Kadokawa Shoten to take on either an artist or a storywriter he could have cranked it out faster.

Probably written sometime after those plastic suits were made to justify their skinniness. A lot of the extra reference material is purposely written to sound like propaganda (i.e. the whole "3 greatest MH of Joker") One of the major characters is actually a Fatima who's lived among people for decades, and nobody knows that she's a Fatima at all because she has no mind control, but she looks the same as any other teenager.

In fact the only reason Fatimas even wear those leather costumes is so that people would recognize them as Fatima.

It's not that he has a bad work ethic, if he did he'd be like either Shirow or Miura and just sell out FSS to some other anime producers and dine in royalties from Bandai to make his robots as plastic models. The thing is that if he did that he would be filthy rich and never have to work again, and more people would become fans of FSS since it would have an accessible medium.

Nagano is too much of a hoarder sitting on a pot of gold, but after the shit he dealt with working at Sunrise I don't blame him. I'm just glad that he's actually trying to do new things (even if they are absurd in scope like that GTM retcon) and still actively working, which is more than I can say about most other people in the anime industry right now.

As far as publication pace is concerned, the only really long hiatus FSS has ever had (9 whole years) was when Nagano took some time off to make Gothicmade from scratch. But whenever he resumes serialization he never falls behind. If he ever does take time off it's to work on an artbook. And he's been publishing the manga every month in Newtype ever since he resumed it back in 2013 (though he did take half a year off in-between to make a couple artbooks).

Problem is that nothing he's written from the 2000's onward has been translated. This includes all of volumes 11-13 and around ten artbooks, not to mention a whole movie that we can't even physically watch outside of Japan.

I think he had a couple assistants before but it was only for drawing backgrounds in some artbooks.

L-Gaim was to Nagano what Macross was to Kawamori. They were all his ideas filtered through Tomino, much like how it was from Kawamori to Ishiguro. Even the earliest drafts featured Fatima and expanded on various other ideas like the Elite 12, but Tomino didn't want to focus on that. Nagano even released a couple L-Gaim artbooks around the time of airing that were essentially all his "drafts" for L-Gaim condensed into a story. Those draft books would make up the events of the main timeline from FSS,

FSS itself has very little to do with L-Gaim other than one arc revolving around a prequel story. The rest of what was used were mainly the designs, and most of them had little to do with their L-Gaim counterparts by anything other than name.

Even the two most notable designs from FSS, the LED Mirage and Knight of Gold, were based on rejected/unused designs he made for L-Gaim. There was even that whole controversy involving Winkysoft in SRW because they confused one of his L-Gaim artbooks with official licensed material and used Blood Temple (LED Mirage) without his permission.

Siren R reminds me of most of the IBO Gundam designs. Lots of details, but utterly bland and unremarkable as a design despite so much going on. The only part of it that's even remotely memorable is the headcrest, everything else is amalgamation of every MH out there, with no clear theme or motif. It's as generic as you can get with a Mortar Headd but without the elegant simplicity of the Engages. My least favorite Mortar Headd, I would take almost any Gothicmade over it.

I'm still planning on doing my own, clean scans of books 11 through 13 (of the original series, the reboot one I don't know yet).
Still toying with the idea of doing a donation drive to have it translated, might help that I'll do the scan and cleanup for the translator. Been so busy with work the last few months that I haven't even had the energy to update Archive Scans, let alone do a scan project like that.
