Are there even AI-based plots that aren't "computer goes murderous because logic or something" or "computer learns feelings"?
>>
>>15333899
I don't think Bolos do that too much
>>
>>15333899
Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive? Ghost in the Shell too. But "computer improving itself" is similar to "computer learns feelings" even if it's not becoming human.

Oh, and Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties. The AI had feelings to begin with iirc.

Asimov's I, Robot and Stanisaw Lem's comedic short stories about robots in The Cyberiad.

Lots of stuff really. How about Star Wars?
>>
>>15333899
Digimon
>>
>>15333899

Yes. Unfortunately, they are rare because the two plots you mentioned get used and reused over and over again.

Gargantia and Expelled From paradise both have good uses of AI. They were written by the same guy, and what they have in common is that AI only cares about what it was programmed to care about. They are very friendly and not evil, but despite their ability to hold a conversation they don't act like a person trapped in a box.

In Gargantia, the AIs are installed on mechs and are brotastic as fuck to their pilots, because their only purpose is to help their pilot achieve their stated objectives. The AIs never go crazy, but you can end up with a problem if the AI is tasked with a goal that is, itself, evil or misguided.

In Expelled from Paradise, the AI is still singlemindedly fulfilling the task that has been set for it be long dead creators. The mission it has sort of no longer matters, and indeed most people don't even know that the AI ever existed at all. But that doesn't matter to the AI, it was programmed with a set of objectives and hundreds of years later its still trying to fulfill them as politely as possible. Its objectives are not even directly harmful to anyone, but a lot of people are scared of it because the AI is very powerful and no one can control it anymore.

>>
>>15334073

You could argue the AI in Paradise falls under the "learns feelings" heading, since if I recall correctly by the end it has started to develop independence from it's objective and the main character suggests it head off on it's own rather than try to recruit comrades.

I want /m/ show in such a vein:
>Earth gets polluted to hell
>Humans leave for another world in a giant-ass ship in order for the planet to be left to nanomachines to clean it up and restore it to its former glory
>The ship's AI takes its job of guarding the frozen people very seriously
>Gets to the world that humans wanted to go to
>Finds out that there are multiple interstellar alien empires fighting over the place
>The ship AI sees this as a dangerous situation and tries to back off, yet the ship is blown out of the sky and hits the planet
>Humans in Danger. Commence Total War.
>Cue robotic armies conquering the world and then going into space to fight said empires (and liberating those aliens that were conquered by them)

Automata.

Most movie makers always assume that computer wanted to become or mimic humans, but this is one of the few films that shows that AI can advance beyond human intelligence and will follows a different evolution path.

Metal Gear

Armored Core.
>Computer's just doing jobs but are antagonistic to goals of MC
>Chief and Nine Ball are fan favourites due to boss fight or personality
Badass pilots too
>>
>>15334377

I dunno. Frontier Setter doesn't really change its behavior any or grow beyond what we already saw it do anyway. It was just super bummed that is was going to be forced to embark on its mission without a human crew. It was grateful to be told that it was 'human enough', because that let it check the final box and finally be all green.
>>
>>15334465
> the protagonist is a random crewmember woken up out of cryosleep for the sole purpose of giving the AI verbal permission that it requires to take certain 'extreme actions' it doesn't have the authority to do without permission.
> the war has been going on so long that all of the important command staff are already dead. Each of them was woken up alone, just like the MC, and served the same job for the rest of their lives
> it's "too dangerous" to wake up anyone else, so everyone is left asleep until the war is won.

Doesnt that happen by the very last mission only? Throughout the rest of the game it's a human pilot at the front

Actually with the introduction of sparks, Transformers are more energy beings that inhabit mechanical bodies rather than pure AIs

The pilot dies to ZODIAC Virgo.

Ophiuchus also seemed to not give any fucks about killing things even when the other ZODIACs were not around. both in ALLTYNEX Second and Kamui (although it's essentially already a trashbin in Kamui).

It's never strictly explained as even Gwen Khan didn't fully understand how he created Melfina. But although she is artificially created she is still mostly a meat bag (originally stored in some kind of cyro-container, Gene even says up close he couldn't tell if she wasn't human)

Asimov's Daneel Olivaw.

Nine and Nevanlinna from SRW V.

I'd also count MULTIVAC in "The Last Question" for that style.

(And, of course, if you really just want a "computer learns feelings/becomes human" story, Bicentennial Man can't be beat.)
>>
How's Destination: Void and it's sequels hold up? The first book certainly had a couple of crazy AIs, but I understand by the time the rest of the plot kicks in, that changes.
>>
>>15340391
The first three Braves and Goldran aren't AI, they're aliens or ancient spirits.

Mind if I turn this into a novel?
>>
>>15333981

Holy shit, someone else has read The Cyberiad? NICE. Great stuff!

As for >>15333899 I'd recommend checking out pretty much the entire Culture series by Iain M. Banks. Humans and machines live with each other on more-or-less equal terms - the Mind of a Ship is much, MUCH smarter than a human being, but they're benign. Smaller Drones tend to be smarter than humans as well, or at least process quicker, but are again typically benign. There are of course exceptions in the form of Eccentrics, but in Culture society being a psychotic murdermachine that can kill planets is generally frowned upon, and a Mind that goes rogue has a VERY close eye kept on it by other Minds.

Though I suppose the Culture novels aren't so much AI-Based Plots as it is an AI-Filled Setting.

Another example, though it gets closer to what you want to avoid, is the situation that gets revealed in the later novels of the Hyperion Cantos (a different series, by Dan Simmons), where the AI have split away from humanity and largely keep to themselves (until it's revealed that they're meddling in a pretty big way in human affairs).

I'd check those out, along with >>15333981's suggestions which are also excellent.

It's the manga.
And even though it's less explicitly supernatural, the 95 movie relies on the same background (the puppetmaster appears as an angel, and is able to magically jump from one computer to the other instead of copying itself like a computer virus)

Once you realize that, the whole plot of the 95 movie becomes "welp, turns out ghosts and psychic powers really exist after all!" and the whole introspective questioning about the nature of identity and the self becomes entirely pointless, because souls exist and can survive autonomously.

But really it's fine, it's a ghost story, not hard sci-fi.

Oh, also memes are real.
