I mean human faces have never been a strong suit of Nagai's. He has improved in several other areas such as shading and details, but Nagai seems to often fight his own style. Nagai wants to improve and get better at realistic anatomy but I think his overall art style is best suited for monsters and somewhat cartoonish anatomy. When he tries to make humans more realistic they often end up a bit lifeless and angular looking, but honestly even though that feels out of his wheel house recent years show he's even improving in that area.

I don't think Nagai is the best artist or anything, but I definitely think he's a solid one and he has improved over the years.

The problem is that he just continues to add details on his old style without changing or evolving it. If anything the characters bulked up to accomodate extra details. The result is often grotesque.

Yeah Devilman Lady is a big part of that awkward period where it seemed he was going along with the crowd. Honestly Nagai always struck me as a bit impressionable since his art often seems to bend at least a bit to what is popular at the time. Compare him to say Ishikawa who once he really started establishing his unique art style he just expanded on that.

Current day art feels a lot more varied in the manga world and expression is more free form rather than one dominant style so Nagai seems to be sticking more to his personal style and expanding on it. Or it could also be old age that Nagai just doesn't care about comparing himself to others and is just trying to be himself, which is when Nagai is at his best.
