Spacenoids were originally ejected out into space not of their own volition, and so they grew up hating that they were forced out to live in space. So eventually they hated the people who lived on earth because they didn't suffer like they did. The Prime minister who wanted to solve the whole spacenoid problem wanted to bring back all the spacenoids back to earth, and then after a period of time send them back to space voluntarily.

Because living in space is hard and dangerous. Even with protection, you are looking at constantly being bombarded with cosmic rays. Even with regular supply runs, you are a single industrial accident from everyone in your city running out of air or water. Its an incredibly stressful environment.

Even space colony is, essentially, a pressure cooker designed to stress people the fuck out and breed craziness. And since many of those people likely never actually go to Earth, its easy to imagine Earth as a paradise of unlimited resources, which fosters resentment.

Its an audience ready made to latch on to any kind of batshit crazy supremacy ideology.

And note that, since the colonies can easily and cheaply move their own shit around in space, people living up there will slowly forget the fact that living in a gravity well means you need a fuckton of fuel just to get a few measly tons into orbit. Higher fuel cost means getting things from Earth is more expensive, which leads spacenoids to wrongfully assume that the feddies are trying to fuck them over instead of the simple fact that they literally could not afford to sell them shit for any cheaper.

They say earthlings are bound by gravity, but the fact of the matter is that they're just bound by basic economics.

Personally, I think the problem in bringing up differences between living in Earth and living in space is that those from Earth should have gotten off their high horse as the planetary representative of mankind as soon as man began making space their second home, but that didn't happen.

Technically yes - up until the UC 120s when the feds just gave up trying to govern the colonies. Prior to that point everyone in the colonies were federation citizens and likely paid taxes(save those in side 3 and 6 as they gain full independence). The counter point is that the federation ran a MASSIVE welfare program (part of why they were so eager to sell axis was to use the money for social spending), and they built the colonies in the first place.

This is also a big reason for why having a military presence in space is practically mandatory: It is so very easy to kill people on Earth by dropping rocks on them. Gravitational potential energy of an object in orbit is just too high, if there wasn't someone around to police the orbitals any asshole with a mass driver could kill everyone on Earth. So that plays a big part, too, the nations of Earth are doing what's only reasonable, but the people in the colonies see it as military occupation and resent that.

No, they can subsist just fine. All the elements you need for life are up there in the carbonaceous asteroids. They can make their own fertilizer, grow their own crops. Plenty of mineral resources, too, asteroid mining should be enough to supply them with all the raw materials they need. Energy, well, solar panels are a lot more effective in space due to lack of atmosphere to block sunlight or gravity to limit the size of the panels. And in UC Gundam at least, space has by far the advantage when it comes to fusion power. Helium-3 is so rare on Earth it literally costs a million times its weight in gold, but there's a lot more in lunar illmenite deposits or the atmospheres of the gas giants. No, space colonies could support themselves just fine. There are lots of space colonies other than Zeon, and they're doing just fine. Zeon is failing without imports because it is a poorly-managed state, not because of the inherent impracticality of space colonization.

I think side 3's problems are born of being the colonies farthest from earth. Transport costs for goods are going to be more expensive because of that, and that will in turn drive up the costs of consumer goods. At the same time, it's unlikely the Side 3 has any unique industry that would make them more attractive trading partners over any of the other sides. When they went independent in UC 58, they would have lost any Federation subsidies that propped up their economy, and that in combinations with any import/export taxes and tariffs the new government might have levied would have destroyed trade with Side 3.

Basically Side 3's location puts them at an economic disadvantage, and that might have fueled the fires of rebellion that in turn made the economic situations worse.
