This. Setsuna spends more time shooting people with his GN Spatulas in the 00 Gundam than he does stabbing them, and for Exia I don't know how you got 'HONORABURU' out of curbstomping people by abusing your tech advantage.

00 Raiser's whole deal was firing BFG's disguised as "swords"

You forgot that Exia/00 was a necessary melee fighter because the solid swords were anti-GN-Field and can be used against anti-beam disruptors.

Superior tech meant he could destroy S1 MS easily up-close. During the season there were many MS that put up a fight in close-combat. Exia's purpose was also to counter-act GN-defenses as GN physical weapons completely nullify that defense (see GN Fields).

This is all rectified when the pseudo-GN drives were mass-produced in S2 and the 00 was given ranged weaponry to accommodate.

Original Red Frame Astray had a katana, but the main reason was that solid weapons didn't drain the shitty battery most cosmic era suits had and the enemies wouldn't have phase shift armour so more efficient than using a beam sabre.
