They're no more traditional than IBO or Thunderbolt's design though. They're intentionally slightly goofy and friendly looking, with even brighter color schemes than normal along with a lot of use of curves in most of them. The designs get even more non-traditional in the show when you go outside the G-Self and G-Arcane to designs like the G-Lucifer or just stop looking at the Gundams altogether and look at units like the Yggdrassil.

Technically, that was the only thing that made sense until the Atlas jumped the shark HARD.

Thunderbolt's bulky/hueg designs (stupid sub-arms everywhere aside) could be fluffed to predict the eventual smooth curves and similarly bulky backpacks of the Zeta/ZZ-era of UC MS design.

The Atlas itself really is an ugly aberrancy that nobody had the sense enough to knock off of the design board. I'm surprised Katoki didn't just tell Ohtagaki it looks ridiculous and awful, but he has been sort of lazier in the past decade or so I feel.

The TB aesthetic up until Atlas could have been described as "MS by NASA". The GM ver Thunderbolt exemplifies this, especially when you look at reference artwork of it. It's very, very geometrically consistent, parallel lines are in every single feature, rotors and hydraulics are centrally and pragmatically placed and arms are covered with boots, not to mention UNLIMITED VERNIER WORKS going on everywhere.

And then you have fucking Atlas.

And it'd be hard for the Atlas to bomb as a product considering most gunpla enthusiasts will at least buy ONE if only to build/kitbash for the sake of completion or cannibalization. Really, gunpla is an inordinately stable investment for Bandai now that I think of it?
