I'm not OP but you can certainly like mecha anime without giving a shit about Gundam. Gundam is not and never will be the endpoint of mecha anime. All Gundam shows are more or less formulaic, you've seen one you've seen them all.
Of course animation quality changes but the core things do not. If one thinks 0079 is shit why would he fall all over himself for Zeta or ZZ ?
There is definitely more thematic variety outside of the Gundam franchise (UC or AUs).

Unicorn is unironically my favorite part of UC Gundam. The only flaw is that virtually nothing mattered considering it seems like F91-Victory era nobody gave a shit about the hidden statute in the constitution.

It has characters based on Char (Shuichi Akai) and Amuro (Rei Furuya) these days that seem amazingly popular for themselves and with older Charmuro fans. It's more likely that I see more Char/Amuro people now because they're active with something again than that Conan made it more popular, though.

Don't know what you anons are seeing but the dueling scene at the end of 0079 is clearly Char and Amuro's gayest moment. Their embrace even has to be interrupted and broken up by Sayla. The Zeta scene is more like when you unexpectedly see someone you used to have a close relationship with, and you hadn't seen the other person in years.
