What I'm thinking, and probably wrong about is a definitive victory over Rustal by doing something that screws over Tekkadan. In the end its Tekkadan fighting McGillis, now that the battle has moved to Mars this seems to me a lot more likely.

Not if he's supporting the main characters. To antagonize, he has to oppose them in some way.

Take Ninja Gaiden Z for example. Yaiba Kamikaze is our main character and he's a foul-mouthed psycho zombie-ninja-cyborg who is trying to kill series star Ryu Hayabusa. Hayabusa is a good guy in the series but in Z he's an antagonist because he is in opposition to Yaiba.

I don't know but I hope he does. He's surprisingly become one of my favorite characters.

It's hard for me to imagine him betraying Tekkadan, because he seems to genuinely have a soft spot for them (because of their similar backgrounds and determination), but if he does (out of desperation most likely) I think that'll seal his doom far more than anything Rustal/Gaelio does to him.

I also hope he or someone else murders Iznario.

It's legit hard to think of how they can win. Something will happen, sure, but it's 40+ ships against 3. 50:3 counting Mars, and possibly even more if Rustal could be arsed to bring the seven stars forces with him (I'm assuming the stinger at the end implies that the neutral lords have thrown in with Rustal).
