He underestimated Tekkadan. Early in the battle he told his people that the ship in front was a decoy, only attack the rear ship. Using the derelict ship as a shield barely even qualifies as strategic thinking. It's such an obvious move that Rustal didn't think anything further about it. "These kids are trying some level 1 strategy shit against ME?". But the kids expected him to see through such an obvious tactic and realized that he'd ignore the forward ship once he thought it was just a decoy. But it was just pretending to be a decoy. They have two ships, and about a squadron's worth (Let's be generous and say 20) of mismatched Mobile Suits, with three Gundams. I've never seen more than seven Tekkadan suits on-screen at one time, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt.

How are they surviving this battle? Clearly, not all the members have the AV system, and Rustal's men are crack troops. They have top-of-the-line suits, too, because the problem with fighting an established military is that they're really fucking rich.

As for tech, other than those Dainsliefs, I wouldn't put too much stock into Gjallarhorn's resource advantage; without anyone to really fight, Gjallarhorn has been reasonably complacent and not mass producing much. Most of their troops are still using Grazes rather than Reginlazes, and Julietta's upgrade is currently limited to a single Reginlaze. It's a few basic mods and a backpack, these should really be mass produced by now.

If Mcgillis and Tekkadan do escape, it still technically wouldnt be a loss, but rather a tie.

Since the Arinhood fleet is the largest in the solar system, for them to be unable to defeat Mcgillis, recover bael or capture/destroy Tekkadan will send a message that while they are powerful, they are still not omnipotent and that even if they did destroy the inexperienced officers, they couldn't get the actual threats despite their larger numbers.

A lot of the Tekkadan guys are a reasonable height, it's all the kids that brings their average down. Shino and Akihiro, for example, are still quite tall. Orga, Shino, and Guts are all above 6' tall, Orga just happens to get extra lift from his hair. Their mechanic is also closing in on 7 feet tall.
