Never considering how awful PR2 is going to bomb.

Godzilla vs Kong might still be in the cards depending on how well Skull island does.
>>
I couldn't bring myself to enjoy King Kong after the stop motion started, I know it was revolutionary for its time but it was just poorly done from an animation perspective. Godzilla '54 aged much better as suitmation than King Kong did as stop motion.

Honestly, Its a great time to be alive. I mean when how long has it been since American monster movies were made regularly? The 60s maybe into the early 70s? I'm just glad that there are new Kaiju films coming out to feed my addiction for Giant Monsters and I enjoy seeing American takes on the Genre.

Kong looks great, Godzilla 2 should be kickass, a bit worried about Pacific Rim since the name change and no Del Toro.

Rampage seems like it will be dumb but fun
>>
>>15279078
I wonder if Dwayne knows what he's getting into and will have a blast.
>>
>>15272207
I liked Kong '76 and Godzilla '98 as a kid. Those were the only giant monster movies, American or otherwise, that I was able to see, so I had no point of reference.

Hoped that PR and Godzilla '14 would get me hyped up for more, but that didn't happen. Don't care for Skull Island either. Not that it doesn't look okay from what I saw of it so far, but the excitement just isn't there.
>>
I hated Pacific Rim, Burgerzilla bored me to tears and Kong doesn't seem all that promising. I'm still going to watch every single one of these movies they keep pumping out because I'm a complete kaiju whore.
>>
Take off the quotation marks you faglord, you are the cancer that is killing the kaiju fanbase

I didn't like PR

Bonus opinion: Shin Godzilla:

Thought it was okay, needed MUCH better characters and a much better story to be good in my eyes, I just couldn't connect to these lifeless people.

The early reviews of the new Kong movie are generally agreeing that the action is top notch, but most of the human cast are just stand-ins.

If find funny that there are people who watch the trailer for a monster movie and go in expecting to be Citizen Kane w/ kaiju then get disappointed that there wasn't enough time spent on character development. And then we get movies like Godzilla '14 where there is a ton of character development, but then people complain that there's not enough of the monster.

I'll probably check it out.

>>
>>15293803
Harryhausen rotates one frame of animation in his grave every time he is brought up in a Godzilla discussion.
>>
>>15293690
I mean, the movie had more misleading stuff than just the title. Like Cranston being hyped up in every fucking promo, only to serve as a bait and switch.

They also decided halfway into the marketing to try to hide the Mutos, because early interviews freely mentioned that there would be other monsters, but later ones were more vague on the matter. Then the trailers actually showed them and I remember normies who have never seen a Jap Godzilla movie being confused as hell that there would be more than one monster.
>>
>>15293780
That's more of a general statement about the American film industry as a whole rather than a single sub-genre. In the early days of motion pictures, Hollywood was foremost cultural center for film which lead to a lot of firsts and popularization of certain content and narrative techniques.

They animated a stop-motion sequence for the movie, but it didn't make the final cut. The scene would've been towards the end of the film:

Even within the scene there wasn't a whole lot of stop-motion used.

Just came back from Kong. It was far superior to the shitshow that was G14. It fixed almost all of that movie's problems. I'm totally on board for this shared kaiju universe thing now.
>>
>>15293690
>The only thing I don't understand about amerizilla is why they made MUTO the main villain monster of the movie called GODZILLA
Watch the older films. Half the time, the Godzilla gets less screen time the kaiju he's fighting. They usually play something like:
>monster shows up somehow
>monster rampages to city
>Godzilla wakes up
>they fight and Godzilla wins
...Most of the scenes that Godzilla gets to himself are when he's on approach for the fight or slinking back into the sea after the fight

Godzilla '14 is pretty typical for a Godzilla movie than what it gets credit for. But because it's licensed to an American production company, the weebs and japanese nationalists screech "HURR DURR STUPID AMERIKKAN! 1998 ALL OVER AGAIN!!!"
>>
>>15302190
My only gripes with G14 are the cockteases.
I know you have to build up excitement for the battles, but fuck I was sick and tired of it by the time we did get to a proper fight that didn't cut away.

It made me feel "Fucking finally, goddamn" instead of "Oh shit finally, here it goes!"

Beam scene was really great though
>>
Just got back. Honestly, I'm not as excited or amazed after seeing this like I was for Pacific Rim and G'14 for some inexplicable reason. It's still good and there are great moments nonetheless but I feel it took things a bit too far at times and the resulting silliness took me away from the film. It really bugs me and I just wish it was a tiny bit more serious.

No, I'm not talking about scenes like Wanda's magical camera. That was great. I'm talking about moments like the scientist dying a gory death right after everybody breathes a sigh of relief. That was unnecessary. If they had held back a little, it would've helped a lot.
>>
>>15302202
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH
>>
>>15302190
Yeah, but it was supposed to be the first film of a new Godzilla series. So it should have been about reintroducing the idea of Godzilla to people who might not be familiar with him. Which Shin did pretty well. You can't just treat it like it's another in a long series when it's supposed to be a fresh start.

It's just the cycle repeating. people said the first one was going to bomb, and still pretended it did when it was doing well. They just kept making up larger and larger numbers for what it had to earn to be profitable.

50s Kaiju movies are fun. Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and King Kong are fantastic, while the rest are at least entertaining.

>>
>>15302984
There was a point in the fight where he was attempting it against the Skullcrawler I think, but I'm kinda glad he didn't. I've seen it so many times that I'm always glad when they put a twist on it. This movie was gorier than I thought it would be.
>mfw Steve Brule goes home to his wife and his son he'd never met
I didn't expect to get teary eyed either.
>>

I'm half convinced that was Reilly improvising. Would've been awesome, though.

It might be a nod to how the giant ants sounded in "Them!"?
>>
>>15279078
That's a sweet-ass poster. Also
>King Kong, Giant God of Skull Island
>Giant God

This kind of make me wish this is a live action Giant Gorg.
>>
>>15279078
Holy shit, I just realized they managed to cram every monster onto that poster. That's fucking rad!
>>
>>15305834
I was happy we didn't get to see the ants, just hearing some random monster making mating calls in the background without them ever showing up on screen made sense, it would have felt a bit contrived if in just a few days the characters saw and fought every monster on the island.
>>
>>15288523
That giant insects scene was straight up torture porn, and despite CGI in King Kong didn't age well, holy shit it is still unsettling. Also, i liked Jack Black in it.
>>
Any dinosaurs or just dumb looking weaboo inspired monsters?
>>
>>15307213
>weaboo inspired
skull crawlers literally take inspiration from a creature from the original
>>
>>15307355
It's crazy. A creature with maybe 10 seconds of screen time is the main villain of the newest Kong movie. Didn't see a T-Rex get this pushed aside since Jurassic Park 3
>>
>>15289390
I wonder why silent movies never thought to just put the text at the bottom of the screen instead of having their own title card.
It must have doubled the length of the movie having to show the people talking and then freeze on a bit of text.
>>
>>15308405
I don't think overlayed subtitles was really a technology for a while.
>>
US generally don't care much for the genre. Their properties regarding huge monsters are pretty stagnant until they dared to do them again. Only thing that do them a lot are b-movie studios. After Peter Jackson's Kong. Sharknado is the last one to get US attention.
>>
>>15308974
This is why IDW is based; they do giant monsters even while people consider them old hat.
>>
>>15308974
>Sharknado is the last one to get US attention.
And that sucks. I mean monster movies have never really shaken off that "stupid old trash flick" stigma, but in recent times, comparing them to Syfy movies has become the go-to kneejerk reaction for normalfags.
>>

>>
>>15308121

At least 5 minutes.
>>
>>15309952
In the original?
>>
>>15293796
So you only watch new films and never watch things made in the past. Got it.
>>
>>15310162
Yes? I have a roughly 10 year limit on how old something is before I watch it. Is this somehow hard for you to grasp? You seriously think people under the age of 95 want to watch old movies?
>>
>>15310207
Yeah, that's pointless. Age of a movie doesn't determine if it's good or bad.
>>
>>15309952
You kidding? The lizard thing was on screen for like 10 seconds, only to fall to his death
>>
>>15310210
It most certainly does. The criteria for what makes a good movie is vastly different today than it was during the infancy of the medium.
>>
>>15310889
Then you can apply those criteria to old movies yourself. Some of them will meet them, some won't. Same as movies today.
>>
>>15304025
No. Godzilla 2 is 2019, vs Kong is 2020.
>>
>>15310936
Not really. Old movies are naturally gonna be worse by default in some respects.
>>
>>15304352
Think about it. Both being bloody (from one another, no less) and washing themselves off was the perfect setup for UNDERSTANDING to happen.

>>
>>15315942
I don't see your issue. Those movies were made in a time when anything with sound and moving pictures was awesome. Nowadays those movies are just.. bland. Plus, most of them were so similar and repetitive. And I find old monster movies and other similar genres completely boring. Hence why I couldn't get into King Kong a few years ago when I checked it out.
>>
>>15272207
I feel that Western kaiju designs (specifically American ones) are traditionally the coolest looking cinematic monsters ever. Not just the design, but the tokusatsu effects as well. Japanese kaiju look like it was just some guy in a rubber suit or some motionless prop American toku is always felt more life-like and dynamic. Even the Western takes on Godzilla looked cool in their own right.
>>
>>15316113
kill yourself you /krg/ fucking reject
those threads and everyone in them are a complete disgrace
>>
>>15275490
I saw it, I thought it was worse then 2014 goji

If you thought the 2014 godzilla film didn't have enough godzilla then this is for you, it shows off king kong and focuses on action involving him almost to a detriment, i'd argue, the movie is clearly more focused on trying to show off kong doing cool shit then anything else and I don't know if it works.

There's obviously stuff going on with the people and a message about Humans holding grudges and the folly of man etc via a vietnam colonel who refuses to to let the death of his men go to the point where he's more focuses on killing kong then actually getting himself of the rest of his men that are still alive off the island, but none of that subplot ever actually hits you and it feels shallow, the fact the movie's tone in general is even lighter then the 2014 godzilla movie doesn't help matters much.

Also, this is a bit of an unfair gripe, since the peter jackson kong movie and it's tie in game were just exceptionally fantastic at it, but there's not as much a sense of worldbuilding here as with that film and game in terms of ecology. There's an entire 300 or so page artbook that's styled as a natural history guide that does nothing but cover and explain the flora and faunua of all the shit they made for the movie and how they prey on each other; there's WAY less wildlife featured here and it feels less deliberate, with the exception of a giant spider monster that lives in a bamboo forest and camouflages itself by the fact it's giant stilt legs look like bamboo itself that it skewers things with.

In particular, the main monster "villian" in the skullwalkers or whatever were pretty uninteresting. The overall body plan of just having two upper limbs and a long snakelike torso is cool but something about them never clicked with me. Probably a 6.5/10 or so, with 2014 Godzilla being a 7.5/10, the 2005 king kong being a 7.75/10, and Shin Godzilla being a 8.5/10

Nigga, i'm not either one of the other two people, I was the one who didn't even know what /krg/ was.

I don't even watch that many movies, but I do know that I'm similarly annoyed at how much dick sucking older video games get and how they make "best games of all time" lists despite objectively having less content, less polish, more bugs, being less mechanically complex, and having worse video and audio then many modern games.

Just because something was revolutionary or outstanding for it's time doesn't mean it's objectively better then things that have advantages of newer technology and more refined techniques. It's possible to adknowledge something was groundbreaking in it's day and for it's time was impressive but also concede that in some ways it doesn't hold up.

People don't go around talking about how the first rock a caveman slapped on a piece of wood or the first sword or the first spear was "10/10 best weapon of all time" and how those are better then modern firearms.

>posed to you earlier
I already said i'm not the people you've been talking to you cuck

Anyways, a cutoff date would be stupid. It depends on the specific piece of media and how well it has or hasn't aged. There's plenty of movies and games even from the early 2000's that have their visuals age like utter shit and that are completely distracting, and there's also plenty of stuff that's older that has aged fine.

>Also while you're at it tell us your stance on remakes. Is the remake of Clash of the Titans just suddenly much better than the original because muh CG? What about Robocop? Total Recall?

I'd say, again, it depends. Visuals aren't the only part of what makes a movie good or bad, writing, good camerawork, the acting, the sound design, etc are all important factors. It's entirely possible for out of date special effects to be so distracting that it takes away from everything else if they are common in the film, but it's also possible for shit effects to not matter because other parts of it are done that well.
