It tries to have its cake and eat it too. It wants to be wild and crazy but also take itself seriously and make the stakes seem so high. The second half in general is a giant drop in quality, with the mediocre choreography going to shit and the basic plot disappearing up it's own ass. It also doesn't help that was only character with any depth, Simon, finished his character arc in the first half so he doesn't grow at all in the second half meaning there are no fleshed out characters in the second half.

If it ended at Lord Genome it would have been a 10/10 one cour series. Flat out.

But then they went into the second half and none of the characters where as well handled, they did stupid shit to accommodate the plot, there was retcons and asspulls to justify things and it just resulted in an orgy of excess.

They kept trying to outdo everyone by being bigger and more powerful and it just came off as insincere wank. It wasn't even about anything at that point, just Gainex throwing whatever hype thing they could think of at the wall.

People like heroic deaths, well throw em that. in scores. People liked big attacks we'll throw galaxies as shurikens.

But none of the characters where anyone we really cared about so they where just going through the motions. The attacks where powerful but in the end the main robot didn't feel like an underdog we could root for as a hero.

Every time they where in a corner they just yelled and everything was better. Ive said this a lot and it's true that this kind of thing happens in other shows. The heroes get their backs against a wall and need to hot blood their way through it. There's a pretty big difference between this and GaoGaiGar though. In GGG despite whatever bravado they may have hotblood and courage aren't plan A.

There's the illusion of peril. We know Gai isn't going to loose in episode 8 but the show pretends like it's a possibility they have to think on their feet and make the impossible happen. Gai's not a badass because he kicks everyone's ass or yells. He's a badass because he's a hero.

People keep taking away the wrong thing from the power escalations at the end. None of those bigger and more powerful robots actually made them win. The Anti-Spiral was always stronger. The theme was about maturity and how yelling and blustering doesn't actually get you what you want all the time. It got Kamina killed, after all. There comes a time to grow up and be responsible. That's why Simon didn't try to use Spiral power to save Nia, and why he became a wandering hobo. It's why Lordgenome submitted to the Anti-Spirals instead of futilely throwing lives away.
It was tiny Lagann (or Simon on foot in the movies) that beat the Anti-Spiral. Not Super Tengen Toppa Giga Drill Breaker. It was Simon convincing the Anti-Spiral that humans could be responsible with their power and take up the mantle of preserving the universe.

The problem was it was handled badly. There's nothing in the show that gives that message until the last 5 minutes when they need to wrap up the series.

The resolved every problem they've had until that sudden left turn via hotblooded and yelling. They even go out of the way to make Rossiu into a bad guy because he didn't believe in hot blood and yelling.

It's a complete 180 and it doesn't work.
