It's been over a decade since we last had a good anime dedicated to dogfights. Why is this such a niche anyway? The only alternatives to Macross I can think of are Yamato, Yukikaze and that Honneamise sequel that will likely never get off the ground.
>>15255008
There's Area 88 from like a decade ago, the latest version at least
>>15255008
It's a niche because planefags are a small market and animating good dogfights takes a ton of time and know how that is almost completely lost these days.
>>15255241
That's a shame. I would think that with how popular Star Wars and Top Gun are in Japan that fighter jets futuristic and current would be something that would hold their interest even in animation, but alas.
>>15255008
not enough fans of fighters. mecha is more popular so almost every show just goes with mecha instead. Yamato really is the only big franchise to stick with non-mech fighters, but that is probably because of when it first came out - had it been released in the 80s instead of in 74, it would probably have been a mecha show.
>>15255008
>...the design is so realistic we wouldn't be surprised if one actually existed!
Do they know it turns into a robot?
>>15258036
They're obviously referring to the plane part of the VF-0.
Honestly the fighter modes are the only good thing about Macross aside from the music
>>15258704
The last time Macross had a decent amount of robot-mode action was in 7, and even then there isn't all that much. It seems the humanoid-mode is fading out in favour of dogfights. I would like to see some battles where not being in the air is advantageous, but it looks like this isn't going to happen because all of the stat increases are going towards fighter capabilities. With the way things are going someone's going to build a normal fighter jet without any transformation abilities (maybe Gerwalk) that is subsequently lighter and can easily outperform the varitech fighters of the time.
>>15259306
That would be poetic as heck.
>>15258704
The robot forms range from decent to great looking, though.
>>15259306
>With the way things are going someone's going to build a normal fighter jet without any transformation abilities (maybe Gerwalk)
I certainly wouldn't mind this change in direction. Replacing missiles with homing lasers would be one hell of an upgrade too!
>>15259306
To be fair, battroid has limited uses.
In an aerial fight, fighter+limited use of gerwalk is the most optimal choice unless you're hovering for a bit and acting as a floating turret to shoot missiles or something.
Battroid are only for melee, ground fights(But why engage in ground combat if you can fly and shoot shit up? Hell, even Gerwalk is better for ground combat since you can employ assault heli tactics), and if you're in a zentradi ship or something.
>>15259306
They already made what you suggested, and they even gave it an AI to remove the human element completely. The first of such machines took the kamiaze attack from one of the best VFs of the time to be destroyed.
We call em Ghosts.
>>15255008
does Last exile count?
>>15260850
Yeah, Battroid has always felt rather forced to me.
Its not like they're infiltrating many Zentradi warships in the 2050's.
>>15260905
Last exile was a great show but came out ages ago; 2003 is like a thousand years ago in anime industry time.
>>15260905
Not a fan of the steampunk aesthetic, but beggars can't be choosers so I do consider that option every now and then. And Gonzo was hella based during that time period.
>>15264808
Last Exile is one of the few steampunk shows that is actually really imaginative with the steampunk setting.
The only other one I can think of is the Leviathan series, which would make a sweet anime adaptation in its own right.
>>15258036
>>15264861
Shit I think I remember Leviathan. That was where one side was all mechanical and the other side used genetic modification and was all organic right?
>>15264939
Yeah, and it also had the cute reverse trap tomboy who joined the military and wants the MC's dick.
Like I said, literally ready made for an anime adaptation.
>>15255008
It's because the only people creating anime now are only people who grew up on anime, they mostly have no other interests.
Before we had people with all kinds of hobbies and lifestyles in the industry, and now it's full of lowbrow otaku.
>>15255008
Well, gundam has tons of dogfights, since MSes are actually aerospace fighters with legs anyway.
>>15265017
>since MSes are actually aerospace fighters with legs anyway.
"no"
>>15264966
Yeah, you can thank the 80s for starting that.
>>15265021
It meant to implement the AMBAC system for high maneuverability and energy efficiency, and their feet are just used for intra-colony combat. It was intended to replace a traditional fighters on space, especially when space debris becomes widespread due to war. Hell, there's reasons why 0083 was called "Top Gun in space", and MS pilots are treated like their fighter counterpart.
It's implied in IGLOO that they're kinda shit on earthbound combat since they're heavy as fuck, thats why Dom and their hover legs and giant tank projects exist.
>>15264861
That's good to hear, I'll be a little more enthusiastic about it when I get around to that part of my backlog.
>>15264966
The truth hurts to hear out loud even though I already knew this subconsciously...
>>15265017
>>15265037
Gundam has legitimate fighter jets in its setting though, so I have no idea why you're trying to sell us on the overexposed MS angle of its combat.
>>15265083
Yeah, Last Exile doesn't just slap brass and dials and reddit-tier Victorian era english on everything and call it a day.
>>15260850
By "I would like to see some battles where not being in the air is advantageous" I meant put them in an environment where being in the air is a disadvantage, such as inside a cave, giant spaceship, or under a dense (fungal) forest.
>>15264808
>>15264861
>plebs don't even know what dieselpunk is.
>>15265037
I wouldn't really count Gundam battles as "dogfights" because they aren't choreographed like traditional dogfights. When people think of sci-fi dogfights they generally think of stuff like Star Wars, which had actions scenes based on WWII films and footage.
>>15259306
Delta promised a return to fantastic battroid action in the form of the Immelmann Dance. Of course, it didn't deliver.
>>15266990
that's because battroid is gay as fuck.
fighter mode and gerwalk is what people come to macross for
>>15266795
I mean it's hard to dogfight when one guy can just stop and whip out a sword to stab you with.
>>15268547
Methinks you're in the wrong part of town, boy
>>15268565
Why not?
The whole point of dogfighting is maintaining superior momentum to your opponent so you can get the best shot on him, not blindy flail your way into arm distance.
>>15268656
the gimmick is that they're planes that transform into robots, not that they're robots that transform into planes.
without the plane and gerwalk mode macross would just be a gundam that has a lot of emphasis on pop music and giant aliens.
>>15262313
did everyone erase the season 2 from their minds?
>>15268676
I did too senpai.kek
>>15268794
Ok I'm not sure if I'm just that slow, but I tried to type "f_a_m" for the meme but it was corrected to "senpai", since when has this been a thing?
>>15268805
Since November 2015, 先輩.
>>15268805
>"f_a_m"
I vaguely remember that name from last exile, cant remember
>>15262313
it's a good show
>>15265095
>such as inside a cave
Skilled VF pilots give no fucks about being in a cave and flying at high speed in fighter mode
See: Max

>>15276211
Yeah, the problem is not all people, even the fucking ace can pull QM-69 as constantly as Max, Basara amd Isamu does, fuck those three are beyond human.
