You'll understand what can be understood, but it's much more entertaining if you read the manga series first and the manga series is the best way to get into the Getter franchise anyway. But whatever you do, don't just read a random part of the manga, always start from the first volume and read it in production order (Original > G > Go > Shin > Arc).
