In Tomino's original script (or was it novel?), Degwin confesses and apologizes to Sayla that he killed Zeon Zum Deikun.

In 0079, it's been years since I last watched it mind you, it's left as a mystery that implies heavily he did kill Zeon.

In Origin, it's shown that Zeon was a charismatic manic-depressive bipolar who probably was on some amount of amphetamines that blew his heart out from paranoia and overwork.

Choose your pick, all of it contradicts the other in some manner, and all of it's UC.

Tomino's original vision was that, yeah, he went and did it, but Tomino's version was cut down as 0079 evolved as an anime (minor editing stuff like how the Dom was originally supposed to be named the Dowedge, etc.).
