I'm 20 and have always loved all things mecha and mecha anime.

But all my friends don't share this love and none of them haven't even seen a single episode of Gundam.

Why do younger people not like mecha?
>>
>>15206850
Different strokes.
Don't bother them and enjoy your robots.

>>15206850
"not realistic enough" or "too kiddy for me"

>>

I suppose, but these same people also love EVA.

Maybe the edginess of EVA appeals them more?
>>
>>15206855
What's funny is that early Gundam is far more mature than both of those in their character arcs.

t. Almost 20.
>>
>>15206850
I don't know. I'm 19 myself and have never had any aversion to mecha, and started loving it after I watched 0079.

But it's true that I have a friend who deeply dislikes the following:
- Mecha
- Cel animation
- Anime made before 2000, except Dragon Ball of course
So I can't get him to even get introduced to the genre with Full Metal Panic or Code Geass. It's a shame, because he'd probably love Gundam.
>>
Stop trying to look for reasons, its just preferences
also mecha sucks and is gay
>>
>>15206960
I never understood why people are put off by cel animation. It's impressive and charming. And 80's-90's had the best character aesthetics.

What's worse is when you have some friends who are casually into mecha, but aren't deep enough into it for you to really discuss the genre with them. I don't consider myself particulary well-acquainted with /m/-core series, but I at least try to at least recognize the names of influential creators and series. My friends don't really understand the distinction between real robot and super, and I have one who legitimately thinks A/Z was good. I also have an acquaintance who watched Cyborg 009 vs Devilman with no prior knowledge of either work and was confused when he understood nothing, and who after recently watching TTGL a few months ago, describes it as "literally about gundams powered by hype."

People generally feel ashamed of discussing mecha openly because it's seen as "childish" or "unrealistic" so they desperately latch onto whatever qualities about a mecha show that ISN'T mecha (or try to pass off the mecha as something else entirely) to avoid getting stigmatized by their peers.

It's fucking retarded.
>>
>>15207080
I know someone like that. What you need to do is introduce them through a show that's self-aware of mecha on a meta-level (e.g. Gundam Build Fighters), thus lowering the barrier of entry and general skepticism for the genre. Then move onto shonen-inspired super robot stuff (Gurren Lagann), before diving into real robot.

It also helped that I topped all that off by buying him a HG Gunpla for Christmas :)

I have no idea either. I really enjoy 80's and 90's anime because the detail is amazing.

Mecha is a sub-niche interest within anime fandom. I remember way back in my anime club days in college, nearly every person disliked mecha with the exception of Eva. I tried convincing them to watch RahXephon and Gigantic Formula, but to no avail.

Man, Japanese kids in the 80's were lucky as fuck. That decade was literally jampacked with all sorts of mecha series. I'm currently watching Dorvack, Giant Gorg, and Galient right now.

I was idly googling SRW for no particular reason yesterday and I came across some shitty gaming podcast in my language which specific episode I saw was all about SRW. There just is something really unappealing about mecha that makes you not want to watch it. Maybe it's that robots are lame and people don't put enough emphasis on the non robot parts? Because robots aren't cool or fun by themselves. You need something else.

I don't really like mecha myself either, I just try to slowly get through the obligatories and a few others. And sometimes I just start to really want to watch something that's mecha, but I often don't like it. I'm currently watching Turn A Gundam, and it's so stupid whenever the robot appears.
The only mecha I've liked were Rayearth, FMP, Eva, Bokurano and TTGL.
Ironically, by the end of Eureka 7, one of my favourite characters was the robot

Honestly, the shows that make the robot a part of the cast but only subtly are the best.

You have questionable taste. I don't think you actually like mecha.

That's not surprising because the cast of Eureka 7 is arguably the worst part of the show.

Anon, you don't have to bottle things up just because your friends aren't passionate about what you like. People like different stuff, and more importantly, people who like similar things might not necessarily like it the same way you do.

>have always loved all things mecha

Sounds like you got into it as a kid, and it stuck. But any given person can be like that for a huge assortment of hobbies and activities. Not every watched toonami or adult swim, and we're a small bunch.

/m/ is a small board, but we love this stuff, and we're here because we know where we can indulge in our love of robots, sci-fi, and retro anime.

Now go make some goddamn webms of your favorite shit
>>
I feel you OP.
The same thing can be said when it comes to Mr. Yoshinori Kanada and Mr. Masami Obari.

It's just something you have to "get", if that made any sense.
>>
>>15209109
>You have questionable taste. I don't think you actually like mecha.
That's what I said

On the inverse, the mecha I didn't like (not necessarily dislike): Rahxephon, Escaflowne, Sailor Victory, Gundam (1979), Gunbuster, Nadesico, Eureka Seven

And yes, I was thinking that the reason I liked the robot in E7 may have to do with how bad the other characters were and not only how good it were. But I still think it was a good character.

I'm 23 and I've always been into mecha in some form or another. Im not the most well read/watched mecha fan out there but I'm fairly autistic about my mecha designs. I think it's a fucking amazing profession and to have the technical skill to make shit like Advance of Zeta or the vision to draw like Makoto Kobayashi is something I actually covet to a high degree. I'm kind of an unrelatable depressed piece of shit otherwise. I do have friends but they mostly enjoy Pokémon, comedic anime like saint young men and food wars, and otherwise have an "ironic" nostalgia for shit like yugioh and bey blades that gets kind of memey and obnoxious. Honestly I feel maladapted because I failed to develop an interest in stuff like Zelda and Pokémon and I can't even feel emotional connection from fellow nerds. When i look at my shelf of unpainted models I see a sickening reflection of someone who can't even autist about his own interests respectably. I fucking love posing then though.

Japanese kids are the worst thing to happen to Japanese kids' shows.
>>
>>15209116
>Who gets enjoyment out of seeing relationships/character development go nowhere?
It's a simple visceral enjoyment. Just like people can enjoy badass action scenes, hammy acting, or pretty visuals, even without a meaningful context or progression, the same can be said of things like repeated character quirks and interactions or power fantasy scenarios.
It's just a simple basic hit to things the brain likes, like eating candy.
