It's motif. The no 1 job of any visual product is to be easily recognizable, and the way you do that is by using elements from iconic, or just recognizable, imagery. The silhouette may or may not make the motif apparent, and design by silhouette's explosive popularity is fairly recent, within two decades or so, because it's good for speed and getting ideas out the door.
