what are the elements necessary for a good super robot series?
>mysterious source of power
>professor that built the bot somehow
>hot blooded pilots
>overwhelmingly powerful threat
what else?
Being a commercial failure and coasting on nostalgia and in-jokes.

Actually being a totally grounded hard sci-fi real robot.
I would say it should have at least one honorable and worthy opponent that is strong but principled this can make an interesting dynamic between the protagonists and the villain faction

>what are the elements necessary for a good super robot series?
Define super robot series.

>A cool giant robot and good looking fights
That's it, everything else is just seasoning.

Im gonna break it down really simply.
Don't make hotblooded passhion PLAN A.
Certainly have it but it's an end result not a go to plan. The heroes need to have some form of strategy beyond DO THE IMPOSSIBLE. Then when said plans fail shit's actually tense and exciting when the hotblooded courage manages to pull the characters through. This is why TTGL fails.

Are Combattler V, Voltes V and GoLion/Voltron the only series with five-pilot teams and a villainous prince?
Daimos had the prince but only one pilot.

This. Look at GaoGaiGar for another example: courage is always Plan B. It's what carries the team when some part of the plan goes wrong and they have to do something risky to succeed, but it's never the plan going in.
Contrast GGG FINAL, which mostly consists of the heroes blundering around, trying to courage their way through everything and getting the shit kicked out of them because they charged in with no plan.

Not to mention seeing them use the various tools and support robots in different ways made each episode feel unique. The show isn't without pacing issues and it's certainly formulaic but it at least pretends there's tension in every new situation.
We take the risks because we have no choice. It's like a fireman running into a building. Courage is what inspires him and drives him but it's not how he resolves things.

Team dynamics if it's a gestalt mecha. Chemistry and great interaction between the respective pilots throughout the course of the series.
The villains aren't just going to do MOTW shit, but actually strategize and figure out how to curbstomp the good guys. Even give them a victory to prove how serious the conflict is.
Top-notch OST and BGM to match the animation.
Give the mecha a unique design. Something that's pleasing to the eye, but actually makes sense in-universe. Make a conscious effort to give some structure to the tech.
No matter, never lose sight that this is a series about the union of man and machine. A mecha is only as good as the caliber of its pilot and vice-versa.

Didn't you just describe Gundam?
>Newtypes/psychoframe
>Tim Ray
>Kamille
>Space fascists

Not really anything, because I can think of those tropes being really badly done in various shows I've seen. Just depends on who is making the details, and if they are good at it or not

There's Gravion.

That's a lot of autism and stupidity.

You could just flat out say it is garbage no matter what, that would be much simpler and accurate.

Dynaman and Maskman had those too, if that counts.Yes, Igam is a girl, but still.
