Everything Inoue touched was generally very successful, before Kabuto and Kiva. When he started writing for Kabuto the ratings went down, and then Kiva in general had a weak reception, in addition to him often shafting the toys in his scripts. It was during those same years that he also wrote The First, and then The Next, the later one being a complete bomb.

If anything, considering his history, they dumped him rather quickly after Kiva and The Next. Sure they called him to write 4 episodes for the anniversary show, but that's actually very little considering how he had written almost half of Heisei beforehand.

After that, only the OOO half of Core and then there was the recent Kamen Rider 1, which was co-written by Fujioka, rather than giving Inoue free reign. They also wanted a staff with ties to the Showa era for Rider 1, which is likely the only reason Inoue even got to write it.

I don't know his post-Jetman stuff very well, but Agito was a big ratings success (heck, it even beat many tokusatsu from the late 80s in ratings, which is pretty crazy if you consider the overall audience degradation through the years), even though it didn't do very well merchandising-wise, he wrote several Ryuki episodes and also the movie, which was a success, Faiz also was a success both in merchandising and ratings with Paradise Lost being the most successful Heisei Rider movie until Den-O, IIRC. So, it's not just "because his father was someone famous". Inoue himself was very successful before Kabuto.

With most of his later writing there's this impression that he doesn't care for "tokusatsu" and would prefer to be writing something else, thus stuff like the subplots in The First and The Next being almost unrelated to the 'main' story in spite of getting about as much screentime. Even the recent Kamen Rider 1 grinds to a halt for a while with a school infiltration subplot that adds nothing to the movie's story, aside from an excuse to have school scenes.

There's also his repetition of plot devices and story beats, like the mechanical rider system causing blindness in Agito and Kiva, but I don't think those would be that bad if it weren't for the overall lack of caring that his later writing shows.

The scan for Snipe's game was too blurry for me to make it out, but now that people have mentioned rail shooters, I can see it. Before then my interpreted logic for Bandai was "FPS is a globally recognized genre. The Japanese will recognize it even if they only know it for how much it makes them motion sick to play them." Would have made an interesting plot point if Taiga was chosen because he was the only one available who didn't get sick using Snipe. Yeah, that is one thing about rail shooter being its primary inspiration. Many FPS games take little skill, but rail shooters are boring. Granted Taiga hardly behaves like a tactician, by real life or FPS standards. That is why I liked the idea of Bugsters becoming "True Riders", since as an all Revol seemed like a nice guy who really cared about strategy.

However, now thatI think of the show, the way Taiga treats playing games has to make Snipe a reference to FPS games and FPS players. I want to expand on this a bit I guess. Historically, a Rider kept their name even if they got "upgraded", which would be today's equivalent of new toys.

But with Agito we got G3 where the Rider name changed as the system upgraded and where multiple users used the same system. Ryuki and Faiz as well went with the logic of, if you're using a specific advent deck/rider gear, you have that item's rider name.

Despite Hibiki relying on the Oni form being the "true" form of a rider, there were multiple Hibikis, so it wasn't a gear related name, rather the form you took on.

Kabuto returns to the previous system. Den-O doesn't really touch on it much, though the Yuuki possession messes with the system. Kiva passes around both Ixa and Dark Kiva names.

Decade characters drop in as part of the story so it's hard to say whether or not they mess with the naming.

W driver stays W no matter who is using it, even if it's a single Rider (JokerJoker, CycloneCyclone) who have a different name with different gear (Joker, Cyclone)

OOOs has Birth and Proto-Birth back as user version names, and Wizard has 3 Riders using the name Mage.

Gaim is a mess, since switching to different belts allows characters to have unique Rider names, and we've touched on Genesis driver issues

Drive stays Drive despite using the Mach Driver while Roidmude 000 goes from Protodrive using krim to Chase while using Mach driver. There's also the Kamen Rider Jun gag despite being a mass produced suit

Ex-Aid has Genm stay Genm in both the Gamer Driver and the Bugvisor but potentially change names when using the Bugvisor 2. Meanwhile, Para-DX keeps his name before and after getting a Gamer Driver.


A lot of words to basically say that a Heisei Rider's name essentially depends on the gear they're using, except for Hibiki/Gaim/Drive/Ex-Aid.

You have to consider that Takatora used an upgraded version of the Melon Lockseed, which Ryouma pre-configured with an upgraded Zangetsu undersuit. It wasn't just "Zangetsu's new Form", but "New Zangetsu", hence why it's called Shin Zangetsu.

The Lemon Energy Lockseed Ryouma gave to Kaito was pre-configured with the Baron under-suit completely unchanged. It was just a new Form with a different Driver. Think of it like Pallad's new Form. He is just utilizing the Gamer Driver with his Dual Gear to get a new Form unlocked, he isn't getting a completely different suit or w/e.

Same can apply to Duke. The pre-configured under-suit of Ryouma's Lemon Energy Lockseed is identical to his Sengoku Driver under-suit. The only difference is that he is using a better version of the Lemon Lockseed. That's pretty much a power-up.

The way I remember it, the Genesis undersuits work the same way as the Sengoku Driver ones (Generated automatically (I think?) based on the user), but the Drivers aren't locked onto one user. My headcanon would be that the undersuit getting upgraded for Zangetsu is an anomaly or case-by-case thing. If they had the budget, Baron and Duke would probably look slightly different between Drivers.

Nah. Most games with a combination mechanism have a ratio to balance the outcome. There's no game where two Level 50 characters will ever be able to take down a Level 100 character. Grinding up to Level 100 is much harder than grinding up to Level 50 twice. That's the reason games that have a similar concept will put a ratio. So combining two Level 50 characters would end up with a Level 75 (for example) character. I suppose the reason Perfect Knockout Fighter is Level 99 is due to the Gamer Driver boosting up output power of the Dual Gear.

I'd argue it wouldn't be a huge budget issue since the most visible upgrade between Zangetsus was the helmet change which was relatively simple. Drivers are weird because Baron and Duke both use lemon energy and get different suits. Marika however uses Ryoma's driver for her peach energy just fine. You could make the argument that Ryoma specifically did something for his Lemon Energy and Dragonfruits energy form that allowed him to use his unique suit but I'd be surprised if he didn't expect to ever need Peach and want his own suit.

The under-suits (and forms) were Ryouma's creations. The Sengoku Drivers that were given out didn't just generate under-suits out of thin air. It was all Ryouma's plan to excite people about the Drivers and their power. You could say that him including blank face-plates was a way to make the Drivers more interesting and surprising to his guinea pigs.

When he created the Genesis Drivers and, later on, the mass-produced Sengoku Drivers, he didn't care about whether people would get excited or not about them. He created them for personal/military use. But since he created the Genesis Drivers for specific people, he probably just went on and made under-suits for them (that's just a speculation, but it makes sense if you think that Ryouma himself said that he added jiggles because he liked them). He also made a special new under-suit for a small amount of the Sengoku Drivers, one of which was used by Knuckle, for troop leaders.

Baron and Duke, though. Unless you mean each individual instance of a Lockseed, which is possible. I forget how Baron got his Lemon Energy Lockseed but if he stole it it wouldn't make sense for it to be Baron already.
There's also that time Baron ripped off his Sengoku Driver and put on the Genesis Driver. Could mean he did that to load the Baron data onto the belt/lockseed, or it just reads his DNA.

The main character can't be invincible (even if there's a form called Invincible), otherwise he'd just punch all the villains away. Unless Chronos is going to also be invincible, which would be interesting. Or perhaps "invincible" in the sense of can't be killed, which would just be basically Ghost.

The Energy Lockseeds cannot be obtained through converting the fruits of Helheim, just like Kachidoki. They are as artificial as normal Lockseeds (after all the conversion happens through the use of the Sengoku Driver and has no relation to the fruits themselves), but since they can only be created by Ryouma, it's up to him to decide what they look like.
