No. Sidonia is not Nihei's best work, not by a long shot. It would have been, had he hired a competent writer. But he didn't do that, he not only downgraded his art, but ran Sidonia into the shit with penis-guy. The potential for a science fiction epic was always there, he just failed to realise it.

Nihei has always been first and foremost a visual genius. Writing is not his forte, and Sidonia demonstrates this more than anything.

it never was intended to be a scifi epic, since the beginning and all way through the story it was about Sidonia and its residents. The focus he puts on the characters and what do they do and how is the life in Sidonia, it was always this and not an epic adventure to kill all the gaunas. The point is that they do not even want to engage in fight with gaunas most of the time, but if they need to, they will, after that, some will stop fighting to live on through.

You do understand that epic is not synonym for all out war right ? Sidonia had the signs of an epic, Nihei just dropped the ball when it went all harem. At that point Sidonia stops being defensible. He even got tired and threw out one of the worst endings ever.
Do not mistake me, there are a couple of great chapters but taken as a whole, Sidonia utterly fails at being something more than just your standard harem shit.

I think Nihei is a great artist but I think he is really bad at paneling a lot of the time. His flow of action can be so muddy sometimes and reach outright confusing at others.

Man, I asked HIMSELF last year about what was Sidonia about when he came into Brazil. Sidonia as whole is a turning point in his career, he wanted to do a commercial work, he wanted to do a different thing than he did in blame or biomega. His artstyle change is also something that he wanted to change too, less black and more white.

When I asked him what were the gauna he told me that he didnt wanted to explain because he felt that it was not needed, that wasnt the point of the story, it was not why are they attacking and it was about: they are attacking lets defend it, and when it was over, lets live our own lives.

What is happening is that you saw something and you EXPECTED that it was going into that direction but that was never the case.

And the ending was fine, Sidonia will go on, Tanikaze will be with his family and so, its a perfect ending to this type of story.

It could've been a space epic with a Japanese flavor and Nihei spice, which was true until something like Vol. 3. Then it turned into Sidonia Gakuen, which perhaps was a business decision.

Happy that Nihei's name got a little more relevant thanks to how it turned out, but thinking about what it could've been still hurts.
