Except they can. They have the rights to Star Trek and are able to use them and dictate their use to others how they see fit.

A new series is on the way this year and CBS/Paramount don't want it getting overshadowed/confused with by fan works like Axanar and Pacific 201, both also slated for release sometime this year. As we learned last year with the AM2R debacle, anything that isn't official and gains enough popularity/buzz is often treated as a commercial threat, especially when people consider the fanwork as better than the officially licensed material.

Paramount made a lawyer's laundry list of restrictions due to Axanar.

For example, you can't have alcohol in any film. Even though no one was shy about drinking any time in the series. And no, no one knows if even synthohol counts or not.

The new restrictions are 100% because of Axanar. It was revealed in 2015 that a lot of the production money (of which they received far more than they asked for) was going right into the producer's pocket and being used for other projects (both things that are prohibited by most crowdfunding sites anyway). Had the money stayed within Axanar's production like it was supposed to, this would have never happened.

You'll note that one of the requirements now is that the budget can't exceed $50k and the production team isn't ever allowed to fundraise or use more than that. Axanar raised over $600k before the lawsuit happened.

We're getting nothing. We're getting two short 15 minute films that will be able to tell no story whatsoever. Meanwhile, the Axanar team used Crowdfunding money to build a studio they can then rent out for more cash to other studios. I want it to be good, I do, It's just there's been issues that give me pause about it, the show runner leaving, it getting pushed back, I mean this could end up working it's favor I admit (the timetable was unreasonable before hand) but at the same time, I've seen it happen before.

I want this shit to be good, and I want to to do well, I've been a fan of trek most of my damn life, and Discovery is going to be the real prime universe trek since Enterprise, I don't want them to blow it and be 'Well lol obviously they want more of those reboot movies! Normal TV trek don't sell!'

I don't need every little thing to be to my liking with this, or anything else, I just don't want to see what happened to Enterprise, or other production issues happen here, so yeah I might be a bit of cynic about shit, but given the last two entries and their issues, on top of the franchise being abandoned aside from merchandising and the Reboots, I have reasons for it. I mean either way I'm gonna watch the show and get some enjoyment out of it (Even voyager had it's moments I liked). I'm just hoping this makes it off of the starting block is all. And that CBS' insistence it's on their own streaming service doesn't hurt it either.
